DescriptionI picked up the prose version of "American Gods" in a Japanese book store with a foreign-language section. The story is an epic meditation on "immigrants" coming to America, the worth of the new vs. the traditional, how America and Americans have changed over time, how "new gods" are created and, of course, the power inherit in roadside attractions. The comic version is an especially faithful "Classics Illustrated" adaptation by P. Craig Russell, with interior art (mostly) by Scott Hampton. The regular-edition cover art is by Glenn Fabry of Preacher and Hellblazer fame. Fabry is one of those artists whose attention to detail commands my admiration, so earlier this year, I was highly tempted when offered my choice of Mr. Fabry's "AG" covers (except, I think, for issue #1 cover and, maybe, the "I Love Lucy" cover for issue #7, as they had already been sold). Anyhoo, I was in the middle of paying for another page of art and unable to act at that time, but I was particularly enamored with the cover of issue #4. This particular cover was a bit of an anomaly. Unlike the others Fabry did for the series, it did not directly depict a scene from the story, but rather was a fanciful cover that featured three of the main characters (Shadow, Mr. Wednesday and Shadow's deceased wife, Laura, whom Shadow had inadvertently brought back from the dead as a sort of semi-living unstoppable revenant) cruising down the middle of an American highway in a car straddling the line between the waking world of mortals and the shadow world of gods and monsters. It also contained a plethora of details, along with that special mix of humor and horror I have come to love in Mr. Fabry's work. The cover itself wasn't painted, so the price was within what I consider the realm of reason, but, "Ah well," said I at the time, "I can't have everything." And so I let the opportunity pass me, or so I thought. Recently, the owner contacted me again and told me that the cover of issue 4 would be put up for auction with a starting bid that was very enticing. Thinking that someone would surely outbid me, I nevertheless decided to go for it and somehow won the day. So, thanks, guys and gals, for letting me win. I appreciate it. Note: Mr. Fabry drew the car with right-hand drive (like here in Japan, the UK, Ireland and, I'm sure, elsewhere) with Shadow in the driver's seat (as per his job description). For the published cover, the powers that be changed it over to an American-style left-hand drive with Mr. Wednesday at the wheel and gave Shadow a bottle to hold. Heh. I've really enjoyed Fabry's cover work on this series. This a great example of the strength of his work on them.
