DescriptionWhen a fellow collector on CAF contacted me about the possibility of trading one of my pages, he knew I had a soft spot in my heart for '70's &'80's era comics. After a few emails, an 8.5 x 11 commission of Prince Acroyear from the Micronauts series by the comic's first and best artist, Michael Golden, was one of the pieces he offered up to make the trade work. When I saw the first issue of Micronauts on the stands, the cover (which was by Dave Cockrum and Al Milgrom) indicated that it was a Star Wars pastiche, but, hey, I liked Star Wars, so I picked it up. When I opened the cover and saw Golden's art, I could not get my ¢35 (plus tax) to the cash register fast enough. I had followed and loved Golden's prior work at DC and I especially loved his Batman work, but his and inker Joe Rubinstein's work on the Micronauts blew me away. By the end of the first issue, the similarities with Star Wars faded to the background and it became its own thing to me. Many of the stories he drew on that series stand out in my memory, but this commission reminds me of his last issue as the book's main artist. In issue 12, the blood fued battle to the death between Acroyear and his brother, Prince Shaitan, was one of the most unforgettable and a hell of a swan song for the original art team. Since joining CAF, I've enjoyed seeing many of the nice commissions (and one very infamous one) that Mr. Golden has done over the years. Now, thanks to a trade, I can enjoy one of my own. When it comes to visual association, Golden is to Micronauts what Perez was to Teen Titans (although Mike's run on his book was nowhere near as long as George's on TT). For 12 short issues, he owned that book and those characters. Congrats on a cool pinup!

Nice Golden commission! He was the best Micronauts artist ever, IMHO.
