Description

As grateful and thrilled as I am to have all the Wayshak art I do, my one tiny gripe is that I don’t really have much by way of comics related art by Jonathan. I have album covers, I have magazine editorial pieces, I have gallery pieces, I have video game characters, and several personal works. But only 2-3 pieces with actual comic characters. So a couple of years back, when Jon told me he was working on a bunch of Marvel trading cards, I was stoked. Unfortunately, he couldn’t show me any of the artwork until the card set was actually released. Little did I know how much waiting that would entail. Of course the card company took its sweet time with the release date. So I waited. And waited. And waited. And waited some more. Finally, toward the end of last year, Jon told me the cards had been (or were going to be) released. Praise the lord.

When he finally sent me pics of all the artwork, I was like a kid in a candy store. I’m sure if I was still working and getting a regular paycheck, I would have bought half (if not all) of them. But being extremely limited in funds, I was forced to look for just that one piece that really exemplified Jon’s unique artistic style and vision. The good news is that there were two pieces that really jumped out at me. The bad news is that Jonathan really liked one of them so he decided to keep that for himself (still working on trying to pry that away someday). But I was more than happy with my second choice, and that’s the one you’re looking at. It’s roughly 9 x 12 and done in acrylic, gouache, ink, colored pencil on illustration board. Now Scarecrow may not be the most popular character in the set (probably not even close), but I just thought he was perfectly suited for Jon’s signature style. Opinions will vary, of course, but I just saw this and it screamed Wayshak to me. Anyhow, I was just happy to get my pick of the litter before Jon took the remaining pieces to OAX last winter.

I was hoping that Jon would be able to send me a copy of the actual trading card, but alas, he told me that Upper Deck did not comp him with any of the cards. So I took to the internet just to find an image I could provide for this posting. You can see that in the Additional Images. Not a great pic, but it gives you some idea of how small the printed image is and how much it was cropped. So glad I have the original painting.

Anyway, just very excited to finally be able to add another comic character to my Wayshak collection. Wish I’d had the cash to buy them all, but ultimately I’m glad that the other pieces found good homes throughout the hobby. Everyone should have a Wayshak of their own.

Thanks Jonathan! It was great chatting with you at the Gilman Brewery Mini Con yesterday.

And thank you all for stopping by to take a peek.

Very nice. I couldn't stay long at the Cape and Cowl Con yesterday but Wayshak's table definitely stood out.

Cards never quite seem to do justice to the OA. Excellent piece!

Totally see what you mean by it screaming Wayshak!  Got those vibes, great colors, and mixes dark elements with superhero (or villain!) fare nicely.  Some great textures overall, and love that smoke effect.  Congrats!

This Marvel Scarecrow is even more theatrical than his DC counterpart with this red mist, pitchfork, and no straw hat to show off the wild straw hair.

Yes you do.  You could probably already have one by now if you would just take a break from all your McGuinness / Rek-Rap buying.  LOL!

Thanks SC.  And that's saying a lot.  Anyone who knows me, knows that I absolutely HATE waiting.  It's one of my least favorite things in life.  Haha!  So when you say this was worth the wait, that's quite a compliment in my book.

It's always a small seal of approval when a piece you like is one the artist likes so much they want to keep it.  But this is a pretty nice consolation prize ;)

I didn't even know Marvel had their own Scarecrow (what next, DC has a Captain Marvel?), but Wayshak's style is definitely a good fit here with the creepy vibe.  Congrats!

Screw the seal of approval.  I want that piece!!!!!  LOL!  Seriously though, you're absolute right.  As consolation prizes go, this is pretty damn kickass.  Thanks buddy!

Perfect execution from Wayshak with this. His unique style is on display here, but it's also a very detailed and colorful piece. Congrats on a beauty Eric!

No such thing buddy!  It's never too late to join this party.  And there's never been a better time to jump on the Wayshak express.  His work is obviously fantastic and way more affordable than some more pricey artists who aren't even as talented.  If you want to feel really good about the hard earned money you spend, get yourself a Wayshak piece.  I can't recommend him enough.
