Another piece of trading card art that I purchased from Jonathan when I purchased the Scarecrow painting. This one is huge. Obviously I don’t know the details or terms of the contract when Jon got the trading card job. Since he worked on two separate card sets, I’m not sure if they were two separate projects with two separate contracts and two separate editors. Since he was not allowed to show me any of the art until the cards were released, I saw all the paintings at the same time. So in my mind, I just think of all that card art as one big batch of stuff. Which is why I was surprised to learn that the first set of paintings (for Fleer) were done so small. And the second set (for Upper Deck) were done much larger. Again, I had my pick of the litter, which was great. Being such a big fan of Jonathan’s, I’m sure if I was still working with a regular paycheck, I probably would have just grabbed them all. Haha! But like I said before, I’m glad that the art went to other collectors and his work is being spread throughout the hobby. Everyone should have at least one Wayshak piece in their collection.

About the art. Again, whereas the first set of paintings Jon did were all about 9 x 12, the second batch was HUGE (15 x 20). I mean, you should see this thing. It is truly spectacular and absolutely stunning! Those of you lucky enough to get a piece from the second set know what I mean. The fact that these massive painted masterpieces were ultimately cropped and reduced to a tiny 2 x 3-inch trading card (see Additional Images) is an absolute crime. But again, those of you who own one of the originals probably couldn’t care less. Haha!

If you saw all the art for this set, you know that you couldn’t go wrong with any of them. I ultimately chose this Cap piece for several reasons. First, I loved the cemetery setting. Even though absolutely nothing about Jonathan’s style would make anyone think of Steranko, seeing Cap lay out a Hydra goon in a cemetery instantly made my mind go back to those classic Steranko issues. And in a weird way, that Hydra guy is almost the star of the show here. Not only is he dead center on the image, he is also the most brightly colored element in the scene. Plus, I really dig the blur of motion as he reels from Cap’s blow (see close-up in Additional Images). I’m really hoping that shows through in the scan. Last but not least, I LOVE that tree. By now everyone knows I have a big hand fetish. But I also love trees. I’m no artist, but to me trees present the same sort of challenge that artists encounter when rendering capes. It’s the kind of thing that is fun to draw but can also drive you nuts. All in all, it was hands down my favorite painting from this set. But again, you simply could not go wrong with any of them.

Huge thanks to my buddy Jonathan for keeping his promise. For the gift of his talent and creativity. And for the gift of his friendship. I love that those things go hand in hand because he really is as nice as he is talented. And that’s saying a lot.

Liking the overall darker kind of vibe but you also got the colorful character battle. Love the rendering of the Cap strike too with those motion lines...exquisite stuff! Congats, Eric!

Nice happy trees! Very nice movement with a bit of motion blur. The card cuts off a lot on the right including the headstone "Hank" which could easily be adapted to another four letter first name and no one would have been the wiser.

That`s an absoluteky amazing artwork. I love the motion feeling I have as spectator. It looks almost real. That's beautiful. I like a lot to see Cap in this dark scenarios.

Whoolf! Well, this one packs a punch! I can imagine the colors on the original really pop out at you (especially at that size)... Fantastic lighting on the Hydra Goon here, and the way Jonathan captures the feel of a cold Fall day (with that awesome tree in the background and the streaky lines that feel like a wind is whipping about) -really- establishes (and sells) the setting. Great work, prepping us for Halloween! And I love the little narrative snippets included here to keep your brain crunching on the image: "R.I.P. Hank" (who?!?) as well as the open casket of what could only be Nick Fury (and I guess this isn't one of his robots, then...? You may have the first appearance of Nick Fury's Life Model Decay here, Eric! :) ). Congrats, Eric - awesome piece!
