DescriptionIf I never acquire another Caniff, I am content. This to me is an all-time great Caniff strip, and probably my first choice of ANY daily from the run, or at least in the top 5. I was amazed to see it in the last Heritage auction, because I always assumed it was in a museum collection, or somewhere else entirely out of my reach. For those who aren't familiar, this comes from the last Dragon Lady storyline and represents perhaps the lowest point Caniff ever dragged her exalted person down to. The high-pulp sadism of the scene is matched to a new expressionist verve in Caniff's drawing- the beginning of his late style. Panel 2 is so good that he drew it again as the stunning title panel of the following Sunday (see additional image), and panel 4... well, it's so vicious I'm amazed it was considered publishable. It joins two other Caniff strips in my collection that conclude with somebody getting clocked-- an odd mini-focus that I hadn't planned on. To summarize: this is a happy, happy day in my collection.Social/Sharing |

Great score. A flight to San Jose got me to forget all about heritage that day:( I'm glad you got it.

Another excellent addition to your already excellent collection! Love Caniff's use of blacks in this piece, and the content....holey moley!

No, I was tempted when I saw it for sale but was tight on funds. It's very lush and boldly rendered.

Supercool. I generally prefer the period from 36-41, but this is a "knockout"!

Late to the party here: love the pulp content with a "punk" approach, 30 years before punk! It's wild to me how much the inking style here evokes Panter and especially Pettibon. This one's off the (right) hook!
