DescriptionWhen I look at this cover, it's 1974 and I'm a 14 year old fan boy all over again. For me, this classic story line that started in Jim Starlin's magical run of Captain Marvel and continued through the Warlock books really laid the seeds in my wanting to be a comic book artist one day. The themes of mortality and sacrifice and good and evil was heady stuff, and was handled in a much more deliberate and thoughtful way than much of the mainstream work of that era. And of course, the art was just nothing short of spectacular. Thanks to Mitch for the opportunity to own this unbelievable key first issue cover art!Social/Sharing |

Astounding! I always wondered if this cover would ever appear on CAF! Congratulations on this amazing acquisition. My favorite cover in the entire run and I'm certain that I'm not alone with that statement!

There's a great many nice things that someone can say about Scott Williams, great inker, super nice guy, excellent artistic eye, . . . . and the list goes on. However, at this point, for me, one of the nicest things someone can say about Scott Williams is that he shares his art for all to see on CAF, so we can all be 14 year old boys (or girls) together reliving those happy childhood memories with these jewels from the past. Thank you so very much Scott. And congratulations on acquiring one of the most iconic, symbolic and historic original comic art pieces I ever have seen. Best regards - Artemis

Scott, Quite unbelievable! This is one of the Greatest Covers of that Era. I am with you in age and being influenced by Starlin's art and writing during that Epic Time Period. Cogratulations on a piece that I am amazed to see surface.

I don't think it gets any better than this! I was 14 as well, and have fond memories of Starlin's 'Warlock' run, and this, the best cover from the series. Congrats!

This was gone from the site so quickly, I missed seeing it. Mitch actually takes them down when they sell. Go figure! Thanks for posting a nice scan so it can be seen by all. A centerpiece in an already amazing collection.

Cool cover from the best short run series of the time or if, you're like me, consider the early to mid '70s to be Marvel's real golden age just the best 'mini' ever. One of the books that blew our little teenage minds. Does anything do that anymore? Great pickup.

Starlin's run on warlock remains his best work full of detail and with great use of shadows. And this is one of the best pieces!

I remember walking into a store in Chinatown in SF and picking up this issue and thinking "Wait, this isn't The Golem!" I bought it anyway and by the time I got to the point where the girl under Warlock's protection dies anyway, I was smacked upside the head. And that was before The Magus even showed up. I still think this run was one of the finest examples of imagination and storytelling, backed by an actual philosophy, in all of the popular arts -- not just comics. The cover you have is just plain and simple the best. Starlin obvious cared a lot about getting it right -- you can tell he sweated every brushstroke. Check out The Magus's mouth! Oh, and the girl? That's why I bought the cover. I thought 'Screw the Golem!'

Always nice to hear someone landing a piece that transports them back to such a nostalgic time in their lives. Hard not to love Starlin's work from this time period. Congrats Scott!

Late comment... I mean... in a single day, think of the shock: the Savage Tales 5 cover and browsing your collection.... I see... this. I thought I was happy with my Warlock page and the half-splash panel of the Matriarch... but gosh, this is IT! If you want only one Starlin piece, no question, this cover is the one. And I am with Glen on that, yep, "Screw the Golem!!" when you see that comic book in the store. Totally. Magic, Scott, magic. Let me know when you set up your museum, I will be your curator for free. Perfect retirement job !!

As I'm sure others have mentioned, this is the cover (and what a great cover it is) that began a story that took me down a path my little elementary school brain had never been before and changed my perception of what a superhero comic could be. Starlin's imagination and dynamism are on full display here.
