DescriptionThis wasn't my first encounter with this excellent (albeit somewhat quirky) book. It was, instead, the next (third) issue. It didn't quite fit the mould of superhero titles that I was hitherto used to and I only bought it because it was one of the few interesting books that I spotted whilst on holiday. It was a great surprise and joy, though, to learn that this was a Steve Ditko book and I was happy simply to be "reunited" with his art. I had found his Amazing Spider-Man books truly marvellous and was somewhat disappointed when he left the title (although John Romita's work was wonderful as well). In the event, this chance encounter with the third issue prompted me to look for whether any earlier issues were available. I did manage to purchase the second issue. The cover was even more striking than that for the third issue. It was - as I was later to discover - typically Ditko-esque. I never thought, though, that the original art to that cover would one day come under my stewardship. It is even more striking in person. As I write this brief reflection, it has also just dawned on me that this is the first - and clearly the last - cover by Ditko that I will ever have stewardship of (not least because of the high cost involved in acquiring original art generally nowadays). It is a most humbling feeling indeed.More specifically, the Proteus saga was wrapped up in issue six (the last issue for the series), although the second half of it was not drawn by Ditko as he was ill at the time. It was quite fascinating though trying to guess who Proteus was - not unlike the parallel in the Amazing Spider-Man title with regard to the Green Goblin. Social/Sharing |

Ditko was at his best doing offbeat characters and I think the Creeper was one of the high points in his career.

Lots great about this, but those eyes really scream through. Those Ditko eyes.

Such classic Ditko in so many ways. Almost feels like a combination of a Mr. A-type cover and the Creeper. Congratulations!

A highly improbable hero, but punchy stories,... And the Art... Quintessential Ditko! I can understand how humbling this must feel... But, also how much joy this brings...

I have always loved something about this cover, which is the diabolical genius perspective. Check it out: are we above The Creeper or looking at him dead on? And try to get the gazes of all those eyes to intersect -- it's amazing. Great cover.

I think maybe you should repost CAB. People need to see this.
