DescriptionAlthough I was familiar with Bermejo's work, I must confess that I was not a huge fan of his gritty style. Please don't misunderstand. I think that he is an exceptional artist and this particular page proves it in spades. It is also one from one of the rare books that he did for Marvel. Even this page is gritty and completely on point as this particular issue has Daredevil under the influence of a special toxin administered to him by Dr Fear and this particular hallucination brings him to a boxing ring where he encounters his father. I believe that the next - and climactic - page is also on CAF, but this one seemed to me to be ideal for my collection as the following page was too violent for my liking. All that having been said, this particular page is excellent and appealed to me totally from an artistic perspective. It is wonderfully executed and is almost photo-realistic. And, as mentioned, the style and content is entirely suited to the actual content of the page itself. Social/Sharing |

Bermejo is definitely an acquired taste. Great storytelling on this page.

Many thanks for confirming that Bermejo is an acquired taste. This is in fact my first Bermejo piece.

Took me several years to get him officially on my radar, but once I did there was no way back. A modern master, this page is incredible!!

Many thanks. And many congrats on a great CAF gallery in general and some wonderful Bermejo pieces in particular.

Many thanks, Dino. Forgot that this is indeed Fathers Day weekend (although this isn't quite family friendly content!).

Gritty puts it pretty well. The deep inking and rougher edges to his figures can take some getting used to I agree but this is a really nice page. Congrats!!!

It fits right in with the early Gene Colan era Daredevil issues where boxing played a big part of the Murdock family legacy. The loud, crowded, dark, and dingy boxing areas full of cigarette smoke are all part of that atmosphere.

Many thanks, Marcus. Yes, and this also goes back to the very first issue of DD as well. It is no wonder that boxing and his father are so ingrained within the psyche of Matt Murdock, as is evident from this page.

Fantastic art piece, the lighting and inking is so well done, matched the dark broody feel of the page. Congrats on this beauty.

I personally never thought of Bermejo's work as an acquired taste, as I instead have always believed that he likely has far more fans than detractors, as opposed to him being split down the middle. But having said that, it's always a case of "Different strokes for different folks". I've always loved his stuff fro mthe moment I first discovered a little over 20 years ago and I'm always excited to see his work being shared by collectors online. Needless to say, a throwback to "Battlin' Jack Murdock" is always fun to see.

Many thanks, Rubén. I think that his style and work are most suitable to a certain kind of story. Some have called it "noir"; I have used the term "gritty". And, hence, whether one takes to his work depends upon whether one likes such stories (wonderful as his artwork otherwise is). If, for example, like myself, one finds, for example, the Joker graphic novel too dark, then that would affect one's view of the accompanying artwork as well. As mentioned, however, this particular page is just right for me.

Well, I knew that somene with taste had to win this, and I was right! Congrats CAB! It's beautiful! As powerful as Frank's issue with Matt fighting his father and demons.

What a gorgeous page by Bermejo!! I agree that his art is a little bit of an acquired taste, but this page is incredible! That bottom panel, with all the detail that he puts on the gloves... wow!
