Artwork Details

DescriptionI should begin by saying that, prior to deciding whether or not to bid for this piece of artwork, I was concerned about discussions that this piece had been tampered with by being mounted together with possibly some extra inks being added in order to "join" two separate pieces together. Indeed, a check showed that it was originally sold as two separate art boards. So it was a tough decision as to whether or not to bid for it. However, in the end, the excellence of the artwork (plus the fact that I had been looking for very many years for a nice Sprang Batman piece (it is in fact my only Sprang Batman piece to date)) persuaded me to go for it, notwithstanding the fact that irresponsible conduct had marred it somewhat.I should say that it looks marvellous in person. It cost a lot but would be unaffordable today, given the stratastrophic rise in the prices of original comic art. Indeed, this recent phenomenon has led to my digging into my collection and to enjoy once again what I have rather than lament what I cannot have. That having been said, there is still lots of affordable - and excellent - modern artwork (which I suppose will, in time, become pricier, for such is life). Returning to this artwork, it was published in Detective Comics #572 in 1987 as a centrefold to that book (which celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the book). Dick Sprang is of course the quintessential Golden Age Batman artist. As the artwork itself announces, "Dick Sprang remembers ... ". This double page spread features several images of Batman and Robin throughout, with the villains clustered, as it were, on the right. There are in fact a couple of images of the Joker as well as the Penguin, and images of Two Face, Scarecrow, amongst many others. On the right is also a recreation of the cover scene from Batman #1. Oh yes, and the famous Bat Signal as well! On the left, we find images of the Batmobile, Alfred, Commissioner Gordon, scenes from selected adventures of the dynamic duo as well as a stat of the Batman Logo used from the 1940s through to the 1950s. Over the years, I too have often thought I would love to get a Sprang Batman piece, but never did. I was tempted several times, especially when it was a pin-up done for a batamn or Detective comic during the 80's, including this one. I remember this DPS very fondly from seeing it in Detective #572 when it came out. The inks are so fine and slick. They blacks have so much lustre to them and the entire montage is an exquisite feast for the eyes!

Legendary piece and such a bold, large work of art, must look great on the wall! I must say that "digging into my collection and to enjoy once again what I have rather than lament what I cannot have" is the absolute best perspective to keep in this hobby - I was just doing the same recently. Congrats and thanks for sharing this gem!

A love letter to the golden age of Batman and comics in general. It genuinely celebrates the best of that era with the timeless iconic style the general audience would recognize.

What a wondeful slice of Batman history! Dick Sprang's work on Batman is legendary. And this DPS has literally a little bit of everything. Love the multiple scenes of the '50s and '60s Batman and Robin, plus lots of images of Joker, Penguin, Two-face...This is like a Batman smorgasbord! My sincerest congrats!

Holy Epitomy of Sprang Art, Batman! Methinks I have never laid eyes on a more profound telling of the Caped Crusader's History! Bravo!
