DescriptionI believe that nothing in life happens by coincidence. I was going through artwork that had not seen the light of day for many a year. I happened to come across something that I had obtained well over a decade ago. It looks like a concept sheet. I now vaguely recall that it was listed as a Neal Adams Deadman drawing. However, it is much more than that. It was drawn on thin, lined paper - the kind of paper you and I would scrawl our school notes on. This makes the drawing even more remarkable. There are clear pencils underneath but the inks on this thin, thin sheet of paper are remarkable.I then discover the very next day that Neal had passed on. I have pieces by him in my CAF Gallery, but I thought that I would post this in tribute to him. This is one of the characters he is very closely associated with (after Carmine Infantino drew the first issue, Neal took over, debuting his first work on this particular character in Strange Adventures #206). More generally, he brought to comics a unique style that was part photo realistic (beginning with his comic strip art such as that on Ben Casey), but was simultaneously comics as we know it. His unique style marks him out as one of the outstanding comics artists of our time. So it came as a great shock that he had suddenly passed on, demonstrating once again how fragile and uncertain life is. However, he leaves a legacy that is permanent, shining and outstanding. RIP, Neal. Social/Sharing |

Wonderful piece that celebrates how Neal can breathe life into the concept, flesh out a full backstory and direction of the character. The motivations and behind the angry vengeance shown in the artwork is made more real and captivating. The Neal Adams mastery of storytelling begins in pieces like this and they carry through to tomorrow and beyond as part of his great legacy.

This is quite a special piece! I find it strange that it appears to be the design and idea concept written out along with the illustration, given that Infantino was the artist to debut him. Nevertheless, it's an incredibly unique and special piece that you're fortunate to own. Thanks for digging it out and sharing it.

Yes, that did occur to me as well. It may well have been an aide memoir of sorts although we cannot of course know for sure. The artwork, however, is clearly his.

Many thanks, Rubén. I had not realized until I did a little bit more research out of curiosity that he took over the artistic work for this book less than a half a year into his career with DC - and was only a mere 26 years of age then.

Cool and unique piece! Timely posting, of course given Neal's passing. Reads to me as suggested copy for publication, rather than notes for developing the character, which would make sense given that he started on this book after the character was developed by another artist/writer team. Thanks for posting!
