This is one of two pages I picked up on eBay directly from artist Luke McDonnell. We don't see his work that much these days, which is a shame, because he has a truly distinct style. I was a huge fan of writer John Ostrander's Suicide Squad, and McDonnell was associated with the title for much of its run. To be honest, I didn't read the issue in which this page was included. While I started reading the title in high school, my comics-buying habit was severely limited during my university days, which is when this was first published. I must go out and track down a copy of this issue now.

McDonnell's style was clearly a good fit for the darker, more intense qualities of Suicide Squad. Here we see Ben Turner, AKA the Bronze Tiger, being grilled by the brass (including Sarge Steel). McDonnell and inker Geof Isherwood's use of plenty of ink to set the tone for the interrogation/debriefing scene is incredibly effective. While Bronze Tiger is the only one illuminated, there's still plenty of darkness all over him, reflecting the clearly dark place in which he finds himself emotionally.

Isherwood brings a rougher, grittier tone to McDonnell's layouts here, unlike the cleaner lines that inker Karl Kesel brought to the title when it first launched. I rather like both approaches, as different as they are.

When collecting original comic art, I always love to get boards with the lettering right on them, which means I've a greater interest in vintage boards. I recognized Todd Klein's work in the word balloons immediately, and a quick online search verified my initial impression.
