DescriptionThanks to the artist selling off a lot of vintage pages at great prices on eBay in recent months, this is the latest of several Luke McDonnell pages I've acquired, but it's easily my favorite of the bunch, for a number of reasons.First of all, it's from my favorite McDonnell project, Suicide Squad, but then I'd already acquired another Squad page before this one. But I favor this one as its inked by the amazing Karl Kesel, whose influence and polished style are always apparent when he does inking work (it's most apparent in Panel 8). The art also features some incorporation of Zip-a-Tone in the art as well as White-Out for effects. I'm always interested in discovering some of those process elements on an original comic art board. Now, this page (Page 30 of the finished comic, including ads, but the 22nd and final story page in the issue) doesn't feature a lot of major characters. We see Col. Rick Flag, a couple of glimpses of Nemesis and a shot of Rustam, leader of the villainous Jihad, but overall, the main characters themselves aren't spotlighted all that much. Nevertheless, it's a great action page, and I love McDonnell and Kesel's slick and sleek presentation of the Squad's chopper throughout the sequence. Unbeknownst to me when I purchased this page from McDonnell on eBay (for a song), this board also features a bonus. On the reverse, there's a color illustration of the Phantom from the waist up, rendered in pencil, ink and what appears to be Hi-Liter (see the additional image). The chiseled profile of The Ghost Who Walks puts me in mind of the style of Chester Gould. Another charming aspect of the page is the smiley-face stamp at the top, which I assume is an editor's approval mark -- an interesting choice in a pre-Internet, emoticon age. Social/Sharing |
