Description

This is our latest pulp painting acquisition, which just arrived earlier today. It�s by John Coughlin, and is the cover for the second issue of The Shadow, July 1931. The actual painting does not contain The Shadow�s silhouette, or the tan and white elements, which are present on the cover of the magazine itself. These were added in production without ever having been on the painting. This painting was originally used on the cover of the December 2, 1919 issue of Street & Smith�s Detective Story Magazine, for which Coughlin was doing most of the covers, and pulled for use on The Shadow since the eyes could tie it in to the novel�s title.

Wow, an original Shadow cover. Doesn't get much better than that. It does seem like it may have been painted over later, as the original published cover has a lighter brownish background with a black Shadow silhouette over it on the side. Either way this a grail. Congrats!!!

What an unbelievably historic find! Amazing that this ended up surviving. Gives me hope that even more historic pulp and paperback covers assumed to be destroyed are still out there somewhere! Now let's see the very first issue cover turn up.....
