Description

This wonderful David Stone Martin illustration was done for CBS in 1954, and was commissioned by the legendary AD, William Golden. The piece was done for a CBS ad, and then appeared in the February 1954 issue of American Artist (see below). It was likely done in support of Gleason's 1954 album, "And Awaaay We Go!", which I have pictured in the additional images. I love that you can see Martin's process in the piece, as he cut and pasted various parts of Gleason together, with some of the old drawing underneath the later versions. Stone (or his rep) must have wanted to do some promo or something with the piece, as he had a note to the printer asking for 500 copies on a nice stock paper.
