DescriptionThe Green Turtle is an Asian superhero who appeared in Blazing Comics, published in 1944 by a publisher named Rural Home. He was created by Chu F. Hing. The Green Turtle may very well be the first costumed Asian superhero in comics. Legend has it that Hing wanted the Turtle to be an Asian hero, but feared that the publisher didn't want the character to be Asian. So Hing went to great lengths to constantly obscure and hide the character's face from view to the readers. He was constantly shown with his back to the viewer, or his face in shadow, or something blocking his face from view. He was never shown unmasked. Interestingly enough, his masked face was shown unobscured several times on the covers. The Turtle helped the Chinese fight against Japanese soldiers during World War II.

Some wonderful stuff here Damon :) Great face on the Turtle in that top middle panel. Probably some of Yvel's best work.

I love your idea of having old work redone and the choice of the Green Turtle is a great idea to point out old and new styles and techniques. Gene Yang spoke about this character at Fantastic Comics in Berkeley. He noted the Green Turtle did not have the garish orange skin color used for all Asians in those days. However, when he appeared in his civilian identity, he was orange.

Always appreciate seeing forgotten heroes from yesteryear getting some much-deserved attention. Looking forward to the continued reveal of this project!
