DescriptionDetective Comics 457 was a landmark issue in story and art. The cover alone has to be one of the best Batman covers ever. There Is No Hope in Crime Alley! is one of my favorite Batman stories. It might even be my favorite Batman story. One of the reasons I'm a DC fan is because of the "done in one" concept. You could get a whole story in one issue. No "soap opera" over multiple issues across multiple titles. Now, they call it an "arc". I call it "marketing". The Batman origin gets fleshed out a little more without the revisionism which is so common these days. This classic story introduces Leslie Thompkins, who comforted the young Bruce Wayne in the aftermath of his parents' murder. Denny O'Neil returns Batman to his roots. Literally and figuratively. Batman returns to Crime Alley on every anniversary of his parents' murder. To me, this is the purest version of The Batman. The one who swore to avenge his parents. No super-powered characters. No villains suffering from some degree of insanity or delusion of grandeur. Batman was Dick Giordano's favorite character from childhood. DG's particular style blended seamlessly with the script. I can't think of any artist before or since that could have improved on the art in any meaningful way. The O'Neil / Giordano story had strength, gravitas and sensitivity without getting heavy-handed, comical or exaggerated. And I have a even certain fondness for the Elongated Man backup story drawn by Kurt Schaffenberger. Find more art from this story in Mike Jackson's CAF. And another page... here. And another page... here. Batman was created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane. Leslie Thompkins was created by Denny O'Neil and Dick Giordano. RIP Denny O'Neil RIP Dick Giordano Social/Sharing |

The motif/framing, which echoes the cover, I believe, really set the tone for the issue, which, I agree, was one of the more memorable comics of its day. Giordano, who perhaps was never better as a penciler than here, did fine and memorable work throughout, elevating Denny's excellent script to an even higher level than usual. Also, I think Leslie Thompkins is one of the better members of the supporting cast to come out of this era.

Too me this probably stays as the most memorable title page from a Batman story from the 70s. Such a great storytelling in a powerful composition. Huge congrats on getting to it!!!

Jaw-dropping! What a splendid splash title page from one of the best Batman stories ever! I love that this splash echoes the cover as the story begins. Using Batman's silhouette as a panel outline is such a brilliant idea! So happy that you own this! Thanks for sharing!

My first introduction to Irv Novick was in The Joker # 6, where the Joker fought the actor who thought he was Sherlock Holmes. When I next encountered Irv Novick, I also was introduced to Dick Giordano, Neal Adams and Bernie Wrightson in 1978's Limited Collector's Edition: Batman's Strangest Cases. Wow!, was that an awesome awakening. From that day on, I felt the definitive Batman artists were Irv Novick, Dick Giordano and Neal Adams, in that order. There have been several awesome Batman artists, but those three remain at the top for me.
When you look at this iconic splash page, it's a no-brainer as to why Giordano is in my top three, and may cause you to wonder why he is #2 after Novick. A worthwhile question. It may be tied to the fact that my purchasing The Joker #6 is also tied to a special childhood memory, involving a special day out with my older sister and her boyfriend, and I had to borrow a nickel from him to pay the sales tax, because I only had a quarter, but Irv Novick's art was really awesome too, and so was Dick Giordano's.
You are so lucky to own this masterpiece. Just looking at that profile gives me goosebumps.
