Description

Of the four Captain Atom pages I acquired in the same transaction, this might be my favorite of the bunch. I'm really struck by the artists' portrayal of Booster Gold here. This just looks sharp to me. I like how Broderick renders Booster's eyes behind his visor. I also like the Bolt appearance. The villain, first introduced in Blue Devil, epitomizes DC of the 1980s. His costume makes it incredibly clear he's a bad guy, and it boasts a kind of cheesy quality that nevertheless strikes me as oddly cool. The striking but simple design is likely why the character has lasted for decades, even if he's never been a high-profile character in DC's library of properties.

There's a lot of vintage goodness to be found here. Zip-A-Tone in the fourth panel to convey the asphalt (if you look closely, you can see a break in the Zip-A-Tone in the lower left quadrant of the panel) is one element I adore. Another is the pasted over correction to Booster's dialogue in the third panel. And I always think a board looks better when one can see editing marks in blue pencil.

Signed by Broderick in pencil on the reverse. Marked in the lower right as Page 13 of the story, but it was actually Page 17 of the final printed comic book (as denoted in the upper right corner). And the fact I've acquired two sequential pages from the same comic makes me want to seek out more. I'll never assemble an entire issue's worth of boards, but it's fun to dream.
