DescriptionPart memoir, part comic and eventually a Tony Award winning play, Alison Bechdel’s ‘Fun Home’ is a deeply personal graphic novel that tells of her growing up in a rural Pennsylvanian funeral home run by a gay man…her father. I can’t begin to do it justice by trying to describe it, but if you have not read it, I certainly encourage you to do so.I spent a long time thinking about what page I would like to have from the book. Having seen and enjoyed the play after its move to Broadway in the Circle in the Square Theater, I knew I wanted something that was both in the book and the play. This page really jumped out at me – children at play amongst the accoutrements of the family business. It’s a moment hilariously recreated in the play. Original art from the story does not look exactly like what you see in the printed book. Bechdel does the drawing (line art with India ink on 11x14 Bristol board) and the ink wash shading on separate layers of paper – she then does the lettering on the computer. But, when requesting the page, she printed the words and the color on a layer of acetate, which she then affixes to the line art. It looks like the printed page you see in the book. This one is a little different and has an extra twist – there were two discrepancies between her original art and the book version. Bechdel re-drew her father in the first and last panels to be in a shirt and tie instead of his surgical gown. She did the re-drawings in the margin, scanned them and then Photoshopped them over the old versions. So, the acetate overlay does not exactly represent the published page, but fully represents the creative process she went through in choosing between depictions of her father - an added bonus from my perspective. Haven't seen the show but read the graphic novel which is very powerful. Good for you, Chris, for making another important (and different) score.

It is a wonderful page from one of the best comics of its (or any) age.
