Description

oil on masonite board with an image area of 19" x 28". This is the cover to the collected Blood: A Tale TPB released by the Epic Comics imprint of Marvel. Written by J.M. DeMatteis, painted by Kent Williams.

This coming of age story, a characters journey of discovery, is a challenging, intriguing work.

I was quite taken by the image. A primal energy, the colour palete speaking to earlier pre-Bronze age period.

The snake is an important image in the piece, as this is a magical, shamanistic man. Recall Aesclepius, the God of medicine, has a staff entwined with two snakes.

I get a sense of a conflicted, constricted, emotionally torn individual, the face evoking a deathly visage. Yet growth is coming, the snake will shed its skin.

The mask covers the mouth, which is a symbol of a gateway; the path is closed.

I wonder if the white cross on the mask represents an upside down cross, the Cross of St. Peter, which speaks to humility and unworthiness. DeMatteis has imbued his works with religion for decades. He is a follower of Meher Baba, who called himself the Avatar of God, but this is a Catholic symbol. Williams would return to this face, the white cross painted on a face, in 2013 when creating his Lord of the Flies series. Children stranded during a nuclear war, degrade from their proper, structured, uppercrust upbringing to a savage state; unworthy.

It's a dark painting. Yet Blood: A Tale is a story of journey and self discovery; change is to come. This painting, as a cover, is some serious foreshadowing.
