Description

Blondie was one of the few humor strips I really enjoyed reading in the newspaper as a kid. Maybe it's just because it's been close to 30 years since I read it in the paper, but none of the memories that I have of it are of Blondie being depicted as "sexy". I just remember the strip overall as a nice family oriented gag strip. So imagine my surprise when I chanced upon this example, which really plays up the "Blondie is sexy" angle!

As some of you who like me are also fans of Old Hollywood films, you might be familiar with the term "sweater girl". For those of you who aren't, the term was popularized in the 1940s and 1950s to describe Hollywood actresses like Lana Turner, Jayne Mansfield, and Jane Russell, all of who took part in the popular fashion of wearing tight sweaters over cone- or bullet-shaped bras that really emphasized their bust lines. There was even a 1942 film with the title Sweater Girl.

Anyway, I think the greatest thing about this daily is not just the Good Girl Art depiction of Blondie, but rather the fact that the sweater she's wearing here is the focal point of the gag itself!

I'm amazed that you read Blondie as a boy and DIDN'T notice that she was stacked! Add in her tight skirts, 20-inch waist, great legs . . . how could a pubescent boy not notice?!? It confused me that the nap-loving goof Dagwood had this hot wife, but I didn't read Blondie for the storylines. ;)

Check out where she came from - in the 1930s strips she was a full-on sexy flapper. Here's a nice backgrounder: https://www.tcj.com/chics-blondie/
That article talks about a Chic Young/Alex Raymond connection, something I had no idea about. Anyway, sorry for the rambling, this is a really nice Blondie example.

Oh, I know where she came from and in fact I own a very early daily. I just think it was more a question of the strip being about domestic family situations and because the art style has always been very cartoony, I just never thought of Blondie as a sexpot. I was fully aware that she was way out of Dagwood's league, physically speaking, but I simply chalked that up to the creators being male and therefore putting in a concerted effort to make the female lead good looking, while drawing the male lead to look like an average schlub.

Apology not accepted, I appreciate you taking the time to comment!
