DescriptionThe Unwritten by Mike Carey with art by Peter Gross, as the Wikipedia says, "follows Tom Taylor, who was the inspiration for a series of hugely successful children's fantasy novels in the vein of Harry Potter. The series deals with themes related to fame, celebrity, and the relationship between fiction and human consciousness."Basically, where is the line between fiction and reality? It's a fun read. The art is fascinating and the covers by Yuko Simuzo, not the Hello Kitty one, are amazingly beautiful and always symbolic of the story within. Anyway, Peter was at Comicpalooza 2017 and a friend asked me to pick up a piece that Peter had prepared for him. That led, as one might expect, to a conversation and my perusal of the art that he'd brought with him. This page jumped out at me. I like the fantasy (or are they fantasy) sequences the best and this early one caught the flavor of the book. It is clearly a scene that could have been found in Harry Potter's nightmares, but Tom Taylor must live it. As much as I liked it, I wasn't going to buy it - budget!, but Kathy decided to give it to me for my birthday. While talking to Peter, I learned that he has Essential Tremors and can no longer draw without the aid of his trusty computer and pad. From issue 36 on, the artwork from the Unwritten was produced digitally. The lettering on the page was added after the fact because Mike and Peter agreed that pages without words really couldn't reflect their book. I hope you enjoy this piece and check out the series. Your description has me interested in the series, and the page itself seems like a mashup of the worlds of the Lorax and Oliver Twist taken to even greater extremes.
