DescriptionThe 79th daily from the When the Bear Runs storyline from Matt Marriott, a daily Western strip penned by Jim Edgar and drawn by Tony Weare that ran from 1955 to 1977 in England’s Evening News. Records for the series were poorly kept, but When the Bear Runs is thought to be the 54th storyline and ran from September 8th, 1972 – January 8th, 1973, encompassing 102 daily strips.David Lloyd of V for Vendetta fame is often cited when folks discuss the series artist, Tony Weare. He had this to say about him – “His style on Marriott was that of a sketch artist - a portrayer of the instant. It was naturalistic, raw and unsophisticated - perfect for depicting the primitive quality of a realistic-looking Wild West. One of his major strengths as a strip artist lay in his consistently creative compositions. If we look through the three-frame strips that make up the Matt Marriott stories we see no evidence of the repeated formulas of picture design which some strip artists’ use. Because of the sheer weight of material most of these craftsmen have to produce, easy options in picture composition are often sought by them and repeated to ease the burden of emitting a constant stream of new layouts; but when we look at Tony's work, it's as if we're just watching people going about their business through a lens that he has cleverly positioned for us, not viewing figures which are overtly posed for appropriate effect.” I can’t say it better than that – so I won’t try! wow, Chris. What a run. There is a rawness to Weare's work - absolutely. And absolutely appropriate to the western subject matter. There is also a visceral nature to it, a wildness if you will. I see that here. Congratulations! The art truck is stopping at your house weekly, it seems.
