Description

After their initial appearance in Marvel Superheroes in 1969, the Guardians didn't show up again until this issue, 5 years later. This established the Guardians as being part of the Marvel Universe and led to their subsequent appearances in the Defenders and their own series in Marvel Presents.

This page retells the origin of Vance Astro and also features the first meeting between Vance and his idol, Captain America. Vance would go on to wield Cap's shield in the 90's Guardians series.

This issue also features new costumes for Vance Astro, Yondu and Charlie-27, designed by Dave Cockrum.

Taped to the back is a cute note from writer Steve Gerber. He's best known as the creator of Howard the Duck, but he should also get credit for revitalizing the Guardians and creating Starhawk, Aleta and Nikki.

Fantastic page, I love love love the '70s Guardians concept by Gerber and the new characters he introduced. Excellent find!
