DescriptionWith the new Fantastic Four movie about to be released, I thought I'd share this fabulous cover from the 2005 "Fantastic Four: Foes" Limited Series. It was penciled by Jim Cheung and inked by Mark Morales. They only contributed the covers to the series but IMHO the covers are the best thing about the books. The storyline, written by "Walking Dead" scribe Robert Kirkman, focused on a series of fiercely fought battles between the FF and their greatest foes, but told from the villains' point of view. (Uh-oh!) This cover, for issue #3, focuses on the classic fight between the FF and the Super Skrull, and clearly shows how he views their battle. I love the way Jim composed the scene with the Super Skrull dead center, looking gleefully triumphant. Meanwhile Reed Richards hangs defeated in one hand, Sue Storm is down on her knees at his feet and Johnny Storm is wincing at the intense heat being generated by the Skrull. Even the Thing is recoiling as if the Skrull is just too powerful for him. (At least, that's how the Super-Skrull remembers it.) I love Mark Morales's killer inks here, with crisp, sharp linework and strong spot blacks on the Super Skrull himself. It's a gorgeous cover that beautifully showcases the artistic talents of both Cheung and Morales. I am delighted to have this stunning Fantastic Four cover in my collection.Social/Sharing |

Truly a masterful and eye-catching cover, where the dramatic action and the focus on the triumphant villain can't totally distract from the sensuous figure of Sue in the foreground. Congrats and thanks for sharing!

A perfect cover. When I think of Cheung, I think Spidey and Fantastic Four, and this is an ideal example of why.

The composition in this cover is incredibly well done. The Super Skrull surrounded by the Fantastic Four creates the tension of this amazing villain and his ability to take on all four members. Cheung's line work is impeccable as always! ANOTHER fine addition to your colleciton

The latest FF First Steps trailer did come out today. Cheung and Morales were on a roll during the '00s. With cover pieces like this, their stardom as Marvel's Young Guns shot up to elevate them to big event status!

I really loved reading the "Fantastic Four: Foes" miniseries, and the covers were definitely a highlight thanks to the stellar artistic talents of Jim Cheung and Mark Morales. This one is probably my favorite, since it features the Super Skrull and especially great images of Thing, Johnny and Sue. A fantastic pick-up, Bill, congrats!

An absolutely stunning cover. The composition is very nicely balanced. Because of his commanding presence, placing the Super Skrull in the center instantly sets the tone. His expression of gleeful triumph is what really sells the narrative, and the way each of the Four is rendered in a moment of vulnerability adds weight to the drama. Reed limp in his grip, Sue at his feet, Johnny reacting to the heat. Many collectors shy away from covers depicting the heroes in the throes of defeat, but those details all heighten the sense of desperation and drama. Even Ben, who's usually the last to back down, looks genuinely overwhelmed. The energy, the tension in the poses, it's all handled in perfectly. Cheung and Morales captured a classic moment beautifully.

A perfectly laid out cover in which Jim masterfully incorporates all of the fantastic four members without it feeling cluttered. I love how he captures the villainous glee Super Skrull has on his face as he defeats the heros. Gorgeous cover!

Jim has been blessed with some terrific inkers, and the always fantastic Mark Morales may be the best of them! But that's obvious by looking at the results here... Being a huge fan of the FF -and- the Super-Skrull, this cover has always been one of my favorites, and I'm delighted to see it in your collection, keeping company with the rest of the amazing jewels you have. Superb composition, with the solid black Super-Skrull holding down the center of the cover, as the heroes flail about, helpless all around him. Jim's skrulls are always the -best-! Congrats, Bill! Another winner!

One man's villain is another man's hero. I'm sure that the entirety of the Skrull race rejoiced upon seeing this image of the courageous Super Skrull defeating those dastardly humans who keep preventing the Skrulls from achieving their noble goals. This foursome is almost as bad as the Kree!

Did any of the villains say that the FF cheated? That's a great cover!
