DescriptionHere's my latest All-Star Squadron commission - issue #87, based as always on the cover of a comic which in Roy Thomas is credited as writer, plotter or scripter. In this case, it's What If? volume 2 #38 (original cover by Paul Ryan, posted in the comments) - and the commission is by Shawn van Briesen. In story terms, this completes the 'Deathbolt trilogy'; Hawkman, Captain Marvel Jr and Mary Marvel have used Robotman's tracking to find the source of the electrical disruption seen in issue #86, and discover Deathbolt and his mystery partner --- the Lightning Master! He reveals that after escaping from prison, his lightning experiments started to affect the Marvel Family, and when Captain Marvel tracked him down, his machines and Deathbolt;s power were able to subdue the hero - and once Deathbolt had stolen the 'Hammer Of Thor' (not destroyed by Cyclotron's sacrifice, but recovered, seemingly depowered, off-camera by the All-Stars),from the Perisphere, he was able to use that to tap into CM's magic lightning. With Hawkman in chains, and the two younger Marvels about to be linked up to Lightning Master's machinery, Mary and Junior take a daring gamble - shouting their respective magic words! They transform to their human identities, as does CM, and Billy is able to escape. The brave young heroine then dashes towards the Lightning Master, grabs the Hammer Of Thor, and once again shouts her magic word - "Shazam" - and the magic lightning destroys the Hammer Of Thor as it transforms her again. Junior frees Hawkman as CM defeats Deathbolt, and the threat is ended. Later, at the Perisphere, the Spectre reveals that his recent battle with the chaos beast (in Annual #4) has severely diminished his powers and, while he will continue to attend JSA meetings, asks that he be allowed to take a leave of absence from the Squadron for all but those cases where only his powers will serve - a request granted by Hawkman and Liberty Belle.
