Description

Offered here is a really nice example of John Thornton's work on Flamingo which appeared in newspapers on 16 March 1952... I think. There is no year in the indicia. On several occassions, I have seen people list publication dates for this strip as late as 1958. I honestly believe this strip only ran for a little over a year with Matt Baker doing the first few months, then Thornton taking over for him until it ended in 1952. If anyone knows for certain that Flamingo lasted past 1952, I'd love to know.

Regardless, Flamingo is a gypsy girl known for her fiery dances. She is a local beauty, often barefoot and courted by men when she moves from town to town. In this story, Flamingo has joined Joe and Billy. Billy had planned to leave, but jumped ship, leaving all his luggage, and swims back to Joe and Flamingo waiting on the dock where the three decided to remain together. A nice daily with Flamingo in all panels including a really nice face portrait in panel 3.

The art has an image area of ~6.5 x 16.5" on a larger 8 x 19" piece of 2-ply Bristol. The art was signed by Thornton and Roche art at the bottom of the first panel and dated simply "3-21" in the last panel.
