Description

"The Menehune Mystery" is a story written and illustrated by Carl Barks, first published in 1953.

The plot sees Uncle Scrooge concerned about the safety and security of his fortune. He has reduced his fortune to $1,000,000 bills and has them canned like spinach. Scrooge wants to ship the load to a remote island near Hawaii, but the Beagle Boys take over the ship and force Scrooge, Donald, and the nephews to do the dirty work on the voyage. Once in Hawaii, the Ducks are helped by the Menehunes (invisible and very little people responsible for many good deeds), and the Beagle Boys are captured by the United States Navy.

In the end, Barks' message is ethical and ecological, communities living in harmony with Nature, acting selflessly, in contrast with the other selfish individualist that always try to dominate and control, failing miserably, Nature.

Francesco Guerrini is an artist working for the Italian Disney licensee since 1990, always on ducks stories. He has a distinctive personal style and loves to put a lot of details in the panels.
Also a great admirer of Barks (as every self-respecting Disney fan, I would say), so I didn't have to think twice about the subject to propose him for this first commission.

The result, I believe, is nothing less than spectacular... a huge illustration where Francesco tried to capture many of the key elements of the story, you can recognize all the main characters, the volcano Mauna KiKa Nui, the native Opu Nui, the Ama-Ama fishes, the incoming Navy, and also the Menehunes (you need to look closely, but they're in the picture).
