Description

This page had been a mystery for me. Even at the age of eight, I knew that a different artist had drawn the middle tier of panels. Editor Joe Kubert was making changes to his artists' work quite often during that period. The effect here was quite jarring, especially as Kubert would draw Stuart as a blonde while Heath, the character's original artist, gave him brown hair. I thought it was a case of Kubert thinking that he could communicate the emotion of those two panels better than Russ. After purchasing the page, I could finally see what was under the paste-ups. To my surprise, Kubert changed the story. Kanigher had Jeb winning the last of his three fights before he was accepted by the others. Also, the raised leg in the third panel is a Kubert addition. The leg that Russ had drawn is covered with white paint.
