Description

Cheerful Charley was another one of George McManus' early comic strips. It only appeared in Sunday page format and ran from 15 Jan to 28 May 1905. Original Sunday pages of this strip are almost unheard of -- I am aware of only one other example in existence. Yet this and three other very early Sunday originals by McManus were sold through a monthly internet auction rather than a major sale, where one would expect such extreme rarities to be offered. Cheerful Charley was a Native American who could completely refrain from laughing and who profited from betting that no one could make him laugh. This premise might account for the fact that the strip only lasted for 4 1/2 months, or 20 Sundays.
