DescriptionIn the early 90’s, Dark Horse Comics released their first ever Star Wars comic book series, titled Dark Empire. I remember the excitement of getting my issue #1 at a local comic book shop and seeing Cam Kennedy’s eye-poppingly gorgeous and saturated color art for the first time. It was really impressive. I wasn't collecting original art then, but my interest in Star Wars comic books peaked after Dark Empire came out and eventually led me to art collecting a couple years later in 1993.My memory is a bit foggy on how exactly I got Cam’s phone number, but I made a call across the pond to Scotland and we ended up having a very pleasant chat. This was around 1999. I was later able to acquire two amazing Star Wars covers from Cam, titled Boba Fett: Death, Lies & Treachery (See it HERE ) and Star Wars Tales #18 (See it HERE ). Cam had done a total of three Star Wars covers for Dark Horse, all with my favorite bounty hunter Boba Fett on each of them. I learned some time ago that Cam had illustrated a Boba Fett art, a tribute piece to his Boba Fett: Death, Lies & Treachery cover. It was used for an exclusive glow-in-the-dark print for the Brussels comic shop Forbidden Zone back in 1998. I ended up finding the print on eBay. Then I kept my eye out for the original illustration for many years until it recently surfaced and of course, I jumped on it. I'm so happy to add this piece to my collection. Like most of his color illustrations, Cam painted this piece in Acrylics. It is on 11.5" X 15.25" Bristol board. Social/Sharing |

Fantastic! In the 90s my cousin and I tried our hand at selling comic books. We became dealers and sold at local comic cons...as such we got to go to industry events and I vividly remember being at the Dark Horse dealer event when the Star Wars line was announced and they previewed Cam's gorgeous artwork.
That year his book was what I anticipated the most and when I saw this piece go up on HA - I thought "wow"!
Congratulations on a fantastic addition.

Thank you very much Steve! A lot of Star Wars fans were hungry for new materials at that time, so I remember Dark Empire issues flying off the shelves. Dark Horse were cashing on the popularity of this series by reprinting gold and platinum foil limited editions with much bigger price tags. I too got sucked right into the frenzy and bought all these different variant editions. :)

I think Cam made a lasting impression on Star Wars comics with his runs on Dark Empire and the Boba Fett comics. They are also some of the stories I remember most fondly from my youth. The mood and colours in his art is fantastic. This piece is another great example of it, congrats on picking this one up!

Thank you Eurion!!! I agree with you that Cam made a lasting impression on Star Wars comics. I started to really explore comics after reading Dark Empire. Up until that time, I had only read a small portion of Star Wars issues from the 80's. Dark Empire was on a different level compared to some of the orginal Marvel issues with its facinating story and beautifully illustrated interior art.

Completely had the same reaction when I first saw Cam's Star Wars work in the 1990s--it was exciting for Star Wars to be back, but the dazzling watercolor artwork was even more impressive! So glad this piece ended up in the right home.
