DescriptionNew commission: All-Star Squadron #114, art by Stephen Baskerville, homaging as always the cover of a comic written, plotted or scripted by Roy Thomas, in this case Invaders #26, original art by Gil Kane and Frank Giacoia.Title: "The Phantom Menace!" (Yes. I know it's an anachronism for 1991 - sue me, I couldn't resist...) Story: In late July of 1942, the sight of a costumed figure around the Perisphere is nothing notable - but when Johnny Chambers screens some footage he's shot for a newsreel for See-All/Tells-All News, two of the All-Stars notice something out of the ordinary, and later Sandman and the Crimson Avenger compare notes, confirming that they had both seen the almost-hidden figure of The Phantom Of The Fair high atop the Perisphere in Johnny's film. Determining to track their oldest nemesis down - and accompanied by sidekicks Sandy and Wing - the two heroes search the grounds of the former World's Fair, and then move to the underground areas. Separating, they're ambushed individually by the Phantom, until only Sandy is left. The Golden Boy is knocked senseless but then - expecting the Phantom to administer the coup de grace - he sees the cloaked figure disappear before his dazed eyes! When the heroes regain their senses and regroup, they're uncertain whether Sandy really saw this, or was just dazed, but vow to continue the hunt for the villain... ... meanwhile, miles away, Dr Henry King gloats - since he's been able to re-materialise the Phantom, as he first did in 1939, and successfully battle the heroes, he's now recovered enough to take on the whole JSA, which he'll do in a matter of weeks! (See All-Star Comics #15, or my upcoming re-telling in All-Star Squadron Annual #8, which may or may not appear this year.) Yes, my theory for the Phantom Of The Fair is revealed - he's a mental creation of the Brain Wave (remember that when he first appeared, he could create lifelike images). And if you think I've pulled this out of nowhere, check out Secret Origins #7, page 12, panel 5 - not only are there figures looking suspiciously like Clark Kent and Oswald Cobblepot, but very clearly, Henry King is in attendance at the first appearance of the Phantom. I rest my case... Social/Sharing |
