DescriptionNew commission: All-Star Squadron #110, art by Shawn van Briesen, homaging as always the cover of a comic written, plotted or scripted by Roy Thomas, in this case X-Men #75, original art by Gil Kane. This reprinted the Roy Thomas-written X-Men #27, but with a new cover, which in my view worked much better for adapting.Title: "Baron Blitzkrieg Goes To Washington!" Story: Following the defeat of the Monster Society, and with many of the Washington-based heroes busy dealing with an outbreak of Nazi bundist sabotage, President Roosevelt asks All-Star Squadron co-chair Hawkman and some of his fellow heroes to debrief him on their recent battle. With Hawkman joined by fellow JSA members Sandman, Atom, Johnny Thunder, Wonder Woman and Dr Mid-Mite - as well as Wildcat, hitching a lift since boxer Ted Grant is due to appear at a bond rally - the heroes fly to Washington in Wonder Woman's invisible plane. As they land, however, radio reports alert them to twin attacks by costumed Nazi villains on the Washington Monument - and on the White House itself! While Hawkman grabs Dr Mid-Nite and Wildcat and flies off to deal with the attack on the Washington Monument, Wonder Woman rushes off toward the White House, leaving Sandman, Atom and Johnny Thunder to commandeer a cab and follow her. Arriving, they find the amazing Amazon in pitched battle with Baron Blitzkreig and, although they join the fight, Sandman and the Atom are quickly knocked out, and Johnny Thunder is helpless when the Baron grasps him by the throat, leaving him unable to call on his Thunderbolt for aid. When Wonder Woman is incapacitated by Blitzkrieg's eyebeams, President Roosevelt faces the Nazi menace alone! Meanwhile, Hawkman, Dr Mid-Nite and Wildcat find Phantom Lady defending the Washington Monument from an assault by --- Axis Amerika! To be continued --- in All-Star Squadron Annual #7, coming later this year (I hope!) Another fantastic, not to mention speedy, masterpiece by Shawn - and I couldn't resist using this cover, and for the second (but probably not the last) time substituting FDR for Professor X.
