Description1st of 2 Mark Bagley posts today, both involving character origins, in books that Mark had long runs on in the ‘90s. Here – the Thunderbolts! When I think “Bagley” I think ASM first, being the big Spider-Man fan I am, but right behind is New Warriors then, to a lesser extent, Thunderbolts. I was a kid reading a lot of comics, particularly in the early ‘90s, and Bags was one of THE guys. I didn’t collect Thunderbolts regularly, but had a batch of issues I used to flip through frequently. There were lots of characters, lots of action, and the pages were just really colorful. I remember the first issue being really long (in a good way!) and the reveal of the Thunderbolts actually being the Masters of Evil near the end of the book was a real “WOW” moment. I also remember it being an oft talked about and Top 10 book in Wizard Magazine, so Wizard basically being the comic bible to me, I had to check it out :) Here, Baron Zemo is observing on the big screen the heroes taking on Onslaught. They eventually fall (well, kind of, but won’t get into that here) and the proverbial light bulb flips on – “what if we could pose as heroes, gain the public trust, then STRIKE?!” A cool and novel idea at the time from writer Kurt Busiek. The big reveal was at the end of issue 1, and here at the beginning of issue 2, we get Zemo’s flashback moment of revelation! I like that it’s kind of all there. The heroes fighting Onslaught with Zemo standing, arms folded of course, followed by images of the bad guys that would become the good guys, then a Zemo smirk. Fun stuff. And lastly, a shot of Franklin Richards, the reason for the "fallen heroes" not being so fallen :) Social/Sharing |

I like seeing the Hulk in his purple pants as much as seeing the Punisher on your other addition. Another nice page you have here!!!

I don't know what it is exactly about Baron Zemo, but I've always been attracted to pages that feature him. I've even noticed those pages command a premium over similar pages that don't feature him. The fact that he often stuck around to do long runs on many titles he worked on is one of the things I've always most respected about Bagley!

It's funny you say that about Zemo cuz when I really think about it I'd agree. His design is unique and screams "bad guy". As I write this I can picture a few images where that fully covering mask just lends to some menacing looks. And you're right about Bagley and his runs - he really had a few during this time, and after, and that's of course not so common in today's comics :) Thanks for the comments, Ruben, and all!

This is a page I used to own, and reading your excellent description makes me wish I had kept it, lol! The Thunderbolts vol 1 TPB was one of the first TPBs I ever bought, and I really enjoyed it, not just because of Bagley's wonderful art, but because of the premise of villains filling a void left by 'fallen' heroes. As I recall, some of those villains started to reconsider the path they had originally chosen. Great stuff!

Yup, you said it, Paul! And you're right - some did end up wanting to stay the hero route. Not Zemo of course :) Thanks for the comments, man, as well as making this page available for yours truly to nab!
