DescriptionNice combo add today of sweet art paired with personally high nostalgia factor – late ‘90s Yu Wolverine!Picked this up recently from inker Dexter Vines. My first Yu piece was a Spidey cover I posted last year (check it out in my gallery!), but his run on Wolverine is what got me into his work in the first place, so I definitely wanted a page. Been on the lookout but for how much work he did (over 20 issues from ’97 to ’99) there’s not a ton of availability. My only real criteria was at least one nice shot of Wolvie…mission accomplished! Some nice storytelling as you move down the page, starting with Nightcrawler teleporting a hunk of metal inside a Thing looking robot during a battle. Not a bad way to take a bad guy out but…yeah…I guess Kurt would only want to employ this with robots. Otherwise, could get a little messy :) Right before the bottom splashy shot you got Wolvie picturing the real Magneto as he decapitates the Magneto looking robot with his bone claws. Then he rips its mechanical guts out while saying this is what he should’ve done to the real Mags the last time they scrapped :) Just a great raging shot and I love his expression. What took it over the top for me were the inks. So crisp and I like seeing where Dex went with thicker vs. thinner lines, like how both Wolverine and the robot have a thicker line bordering their figures to make ‘em pop off the page more. Subtle yet effective! Thanks Dex, for scratching that Yu Wolvie collector itch, and thanks all for looking! Social/Sharing |

I gotta say, you are the master of finding pages that start with some smaller panels of intense action, which gradually build in tension until -- KA-BAM! --- you get that final money-shot splashy panel. This is an excellent example of that, especially when you add in the reactions of the onlookers. And yeah, those inks are spectacular!

Oh yeah, you noticed eh?! Thanks, man. Yeah, some of my fave pieces are those that mix a great splashy shot with a little panel storytelling. And they can often be a little less $$$ than full on technical "splashes" :) And the inks...yup, looked at it again today and they are TIGHT! Thanks, Paul, and everyone, for the comments, as always!

That shot of Nightcrawler is really nice. Beautifully inked! I love the build-up towards the bottom, and really love the Wolverine image in the second to last panel, but it would've been so killer if it had been larger! On the other hand, Yu made up for it by including a large Wolverine in the next panel anyway. Great stuff overall.

I thought the first panel was cool in that that's a pretty unique and deadly skill that Kurt's got there :) And funny you say that about the 7th panel - would've been cool if we could've seen that moment a little bigger/bolder - thought the same! But also as you say, it being smaller lent to getting the BIG shot in there easier. So I'm good :) Thanks, man!

And we all know his final cry "skreeeeeeeei" means "could y'all tell me where ah kin find the cream-filled, sugar-coated, deep-fried lard balls"?

I really like the visual storytelling on this page. That one panel with an eye really brings the prisoner's emotion into the action, and ties the two scenes nicely. And, yeah, if those weren't robots, it would be one heck of a bloody page. Heh. Very cool stuff!

Sweet page, K! I really love Leinil's pencils and the books that are shot directly from them, but, MAN, that's a slick inking job Mr. Vines pulls off here. Really smoothes things out and makes it look really tight. Lovely work.
I'm actually a big fan of the panel 8 image being the 'splashy' one. While panel 7 would have been great (and hey - you still have that one small! :) ), I feel like panel 7 is a 'type' of Wolverine image that we see on a pretty regular basis. Panel 8 is more uncommon, not only in the pose but in the "timbre" of the image due to the attention that could be lavished on it by the inking there. It really makes it stand out. I think it's pretty special. Great pick up, man! Congrats!

So cool to see Dex's ink over Yu's pencils here.
