Description

29! Count ‘em! 29 Spideys here – 28 in the splash and 1 on the right!

Fellow CAF bud Paul P’s been posting some killer Spidey work in the last couple weeks. Other CAF bud James S has upped his DPS game in recent months. AND other CAF bud (and on-fire-OA-newcomer) Octavio Karbank posted a great Cable title splash by Steve Skroce. SO I felt compelled to jump in on the fun with this suh-weet Skroce Spidey piece!

Skroce followed up Bagley on ASM in late 1996 and only did 8 issues before leaving to Image and then to storyboard for Hollywood, most notably on the Matrix, before returning to comics in spots. But I loved his Spidey work. Just check out the issue this piece came from, #419, his second of the run. So many great Spidey images throughout. He packed a lot into each of his pages, there was always a dynamic quality, and he exhibited a nice depth/3D effect in-panel as well as in the panel-to-panel storytelling. So, all that and the fact that there just isn’t much of Skroce’s ASM work out there…yeah, I was ALL over this piece :)

The featured image here is of course the splash, highlighting one of my favorites when it comes to Spidey OA – the multiple-images-to-convey-movement! It’s one of the things that pops into my head when I think about reading my first Spidey comics as a kid and really speaks to the speed and gracefulness with which the character moves. Don’t see this technique enough today IMO. And that depth I was talking about? See where Spidey starts and ends, getting progressively closer to the reader. Nice detailed inks by LaRosa, too, particularly on the building background. And got some storytelling panels at the right to close things out nicely.

Really happy with this Spidey pick up and to check a collector goal off the list in a BIG way!

That has to be a record of Spidey's per panel!  Love DPS pages and this one is great!

Always liked Skroce and thought he was vastly under rated.  Love all the little Spideys.

Only 29? How embarrassing...that is such a cool page! It's a Spidey overload page, and done so well. Congrats!

Yeah, I mean, you couldn't hit an even 30?!  ;)  Can never have too much Spidey!  Overload is right, and in the best way with this beaut :)  Thanks JH, and all, for the comments!

I absolutely love it when arists really portray the speed and acrobatic nature of Spidey's movement.  It must take forever to draw all those images (which is why you don't see it much), but the payoff is extraordinary, and owning a piece like this must make you very happy :)  Skroce totally rocks.  Major congrats!

Man, you're really pulling out all the stops! One of the greatest looking pieces from the Skroce run. I've always loved these multiple image "Spidey in motion" panels, but I'd have to guess that that this one may quite possibly hold the all-time record for most "in motion" images, of which I counted twenty-seven. The thing is, even had he not done the "in motion" sequence, it would STILL be a killer piece because of the cool, primary figure!

I got 28 in the splash but who's counting ;)  Now that you and James mentioned this may be a record I really wonder - may have to do a little OA investigation to get to the bottom :)  And I totally agree regarding the main central figure - just a killer shot and IMO so indicative of the great, albeit short, work Skroce did on ASM!  Thanks, Ruben!

Holy F'n molly!! That is such a dynamic dps and really shows off the amazing drawing ability of Skroce. He was a master of the multi-pose spidey.  He once confessed to me at a convention that he spent on average of 12 hours a day 6 or 7 days a week to do what he did. Just a true dedication to craft. Congrats!!

Thanks, duke, I know you're also a big fan of Skroce's!  12 hours a day, 6/7 days a week...yup, real dedication to say the least!  And it no doubt showed in the end result.  Wish we could've seen more Spidey work by him but on the other hand I'm glad that we did at least get what we got...and that I got what I got in this piece :)

This is truly fantastic. I didn't remember you picked it up?

I too LOVED Skroce's too short run on Spidey. He was perfect for the character. I initially thought the multiple characters jumping was his but Miller already used on DD. A great technique.

Almost makes me want to post my Skroce spidey art ;)

Almost?! Get to it, man! ;) Glad to see others' enthusiasm for Skroce's all-too-brief run! I agree that he was a great artistic match for Spidey. Was flipping through the issues the other night and that was reaffirmed!

Yeah, got this one on ComicLink late last year but just getting around to posting. Was prompted, like I said in my description, by some other new CAF adds. Perhaps my post here will prompt you? :)

I didn't know that it was Miller that started the multiple-images-to-convey movement thing. I know as a kid I saw Frenz do it, Sal Buscema, etc., but yeah, that was after Miller's DD stuff. In any case, Skroce killed his turn! Thanks!

The strategy of multiple, outlined, moving figures reminds me of Gene Colan's work.  Great pick-up!

Good point! And it's funny you mention Colan because, as I write this, a nice example by him is still a big hole in the collection...hopefully not for long! Looking particularly for a page from Panther's Quest where...yes...he used the "mulitiple figures to convey movement" with BP. A page featuring that I think would fill the gap just fine :) Thanks!

I already complimented you about that stunner of a DPS, but here I go again, that's an awesoe acquisition. I also fondly remember discovering Skroce's work on ASM after Bagley, and even though I wasn't fond of no longer having Bagley on the title, I still recognized and was able to enjoy the dynamism and sexiness of Skroce's style.

Bags was definitely a tough act to follow but I think Skroce succeeded where many may have not.  This issue this DPS is from, #419, the second of his run, sold me.  I wish we could've seen more but am still happy we were able to get what we got.  And happier I was able to get what I got with this piece ;)  Thanks, Nick!
