DescriptionTo close the year out I’ll be adding a few pieces that take back me to books I read as a youngster. Starting off, a late ‘80s Iron Man (IM) page by one of the character’s most renowned creators in Bob Layton! Picked this up from fellow CAFer Matt W (thank you, Matt) during the CAF Comic Art Live show a couple weeks back. I’ve got an IM page inked by Bob (see in my gallery – penciller is Mark Bright) as well as a commission by him (also see in may gallery!) but hadn’t picked up a published page pencilled by him…’til now. Box checked! This is one of those pages where I instantly liked it when I saw it. And when I try to break down why, it’s because it’s kind of got all you want in a panel page. First, we start off with a killer splashy shot of our hero breaking panel. Great pose, clenched fists, flying onward and upward. I’ve said on more than one occasion how I love the way that figure-breaking-panel technique adds a splashy quality but adds it in a subtle way. Second – great action. As you move through the page you get the start-to-finish sequence of the Fixer…getting fixed I guess, with IM using and speaking to (or thinking to, rather) some of his armor tech – “servomotors”, “booster circuits”, and “reverse magnetism” :) I’ve always dug that in IM pages. Lastly, some nice sound effect lettering throughout. Try saying them out loud to yourself – that’s always fun :) I had almost the whole run of Silver Centurion issues (200 through 230) and a handful of issues after, when he got back in the red and gold, and this was one of them. I remember it had a great cover (see in additional images below) and was like a double sized issue. So yeah, definitely stoked to check penciller Bob Layton off the list with a page from a book I remember as a kid! Social/Sharing |

The Silver Centurion run was a big deal for young me, too. Nice page from one of the best to draw Shellhead!

So great that you could find such a nostalgic page. And what a page! That first panel alone is worth the price of admission. I do love it when Iron Man explains his gadgets and processes in real time. It's like "tech poetry." (Just made that up). Those sound effects are awesome. I fell out of bed the other day, and I believe the sound I made on impact was "KBRASH!" Or perhaps "SPLAK." The memory is hazy.

I fell off the deck of my truck last night while loading my sled. 7 feet drop onto my back. No sound effect at all. Just a lot of whimpering and a very sore person this morning. It only hurts when I move, or blink, or breathe.

"Tech Poetry" - sounds like an IM arc, or at least a single issue story, I can pitch to Marvel. You good with that, Paul? I mean, we can talk potential kickbacks...but this is the season of giving, isn't it? And next time you fall out of bed, just make it a point to write down the sound made right after. I'll use it in my Tech Poetry arc ;) Thanks, man, and all for the comments as always - much appreciated!

Well...whimpering makes a sound, right? And if ONLY hurting when moving, blinking, or breathing...I mean...could be worse, right? I kid, man - hope you're doing alright! Stay safe out there, and thanks for the comments, as always!

"That's not fair!" Poor fixer, always the stepping stone to the bigger baddie. This page is awesome, Kahlil. Layton was fantastic in this series, and especially his aerial fight scenes. And testing new armor tech? Color me jealous. Congrats!

That's a good way to put it, J - "stepping stone to the bigger baddie" :) Really is true ain't it?! Thanks for the comments, man - you're right about those aerial fight scenes and I'm definitely glad to have this example!

I too, bought a page from Matt W during the CAF Comic Art Live show a couple weeks back! This is definitely a superb Iron Man example, from a great point in the run I was so happy to be reading and admiring as Layton returned to the book. This page has it all, exactly as you laid it out in the description. The large image in panel 1 breaking out of the panel is fab, and you get Iron Man in 6 out of 7 panels to boot, not too shabby!

Great IM Layton page with everything you would want, action and nice shots. I reread Layton's runs on the character last year and it still holds up nicely.

SUPERB page, K! Layton always could fill the page with his awesome tech gadgetry, but never overwhelm the storytelling - so good! I was looking at the page compiling my list of what I loved about it, and you pretty much ran down the list with your excellent description, as per usual! There’s so much here that I unconsciously found myself looking away, then looking right back at the page to see what would capture my eye, where my eye would bounce to, next. Many times it was that gorgeous first panel, of course, but this is just a beautiful, FUN page to look at. SCORE! Congrats, man!

Thanks, bud! And I like that point around "filling the page with awesome tech gadgetry but not overwhelming storytelling"...I'll have to flip through some books again with that in mind. As far as listing what you like about the page...they do say great minds think alike ;)

Congratulations my friend.
It is always a pleasure to see pages of Bob Layton's Iron Man.
Personally I have always loved neo-classic armor, these issues were immediately following the dramatic number in which Tony is shot and remains paralyzed.
Good purchase for your collection!

Thanks, a lot, Ettore - much appreciated knowing what a big Layton fan you are yourself! Like I noted in the description, had Layton IM inks, a commission, but HAD to get a pencilled published page! And yep, this is right after Tony's paralyzed, hence the monologue of his tech moving his legs for him and functioning as a normal man. My fave armor is the Silver Centurion, but it was actually really cool in #231 seeing the big splash reveal of the return to the neo-classic red and gold - I always remember how that reveal was done just like it was for the SC in #200 :)

Exactly!
I believe that the run from IM # 200 to IM # 250 with a few exceptions is one of the best in the character's history.
Mark Bright, Jackson Guice and Bob Layton did a great job.
