Description

A fortuitous recent eBay win! I didn’t collect or have a sequential run of Marvel Team-Up (MTU) as a kid but I had a sporadic batch of issues from later in the series that I really enjoyed. And #148, featuring a Spidey/Thor team-up, was one of them. So when I saw this page up for bid, I definitely liked the art, but the nostalgia factor particularly ran HIGH!

Here Thor’s stopping some bad guys in jet ships before they reach their target. They smartly try to hightail it out of there but they’re SOL as Thor tosses Mjolnir right as they try to make their getaway :) The first and third panels are mostly stats with some touch ups but there is art underneath both. Thor is more to the right in panel 1 and the entire image is flipped/inverted in panel 3. He's actually drawn in the second panel, but pasted on. But all that I’m good with, as the last panel half splash that IS drawn on the board, was in and of itself worth the price of admission!

A classic looking Thor in a classic pose, tossing his enchanted mallet. Love the big flowy cape, and how big Mjolnir is, coming right toward the reader. And it’s funny, when I first saw it, and saw the motion arc/line of his hand kind of going above/around the left side of his head…I couldn’t help but be reminded of my favorite tennis player Rafael Nadal and how his “bolo whip” forehand kinda goes the same way :) Albeit he plays lefty, though, so the follow through goes over/around the right side. So a nice little non-comics bonus with this pick up!

I feel like LaRocque isn't talked about enough. He is a fantastic artist. His work on Spidey, The Flash, and of course the Legion of Super-Heroes made me a fan for life.

Agreed, and I'm guilty in that in the past he hadn't risen to top of mind for me, either. I was an exclusive Marvel kid and when I think back he worked on both some iconic individual Spidey books as well as ones I personally enjoyed. He started out Web of Spider-Man with a bang and did most of the last year of MTU, including the first black costume in #141. And personal favorites in 144, 146, and of course 148 here. Flipped through those books all the time cuz they looked so good. Thanks for the callout, Travis, and ALL for the comments - lotsa good ones here :)

Great Thor pick-up!  And I love how you related that last panel to Rafael Nadal.  I'm a huge tennis fan, and I can totally see what you are saying.  We definitely need to talk tennis sometime.

Yup, that forehand rip is as clear as day, right?!  I don't know if LaRocque was 100% deliberate about having the motion lines go behind Thor's hair/helmet, as opposed to in front, but I'm glad it was done that way - unique, and gives me a story to tell :)  And yeah, man, I'm down to talk some tennis.  I'm often beat during the majors cuz I really like to watch certain matches live...but it's well worth it :)  Thanks for the comments, as always, Paul!

So YOU'RE the guy who won this! I have to say, I was shocked at the price you got it for, as I expected it to sell for substantially more, given the strong content quality. I mean even if you took out the killer bottom panel and replaced it with a shot of Thor standing there, it would still be a strong 4 panel page with Thor in every panel. But WITH the bottom panel as it is? Seems like a bargain to me!

Yes, yes, 'twas me - you got me! And I agree as far as it being a bargain goes - actually I think that's why I started off my description with the word "fortuitous" :) I'm thinking that maybe because a couple of panels were stats that some might have not bid. Works for me ;) That last panel not being a stat, though, was all I needed.  Thanks, man!

Great pick up. Can't believe I didn't see this on eBay considering I'm stuck at home with a lot a free time on my hands. Awesome image of Thor. Congrats!

Sweet action page. Love the last panel.  Always great to see the artists mind figuring out new poses for established characters.

Stats or drawn art, who cares? This page with this great last widescreen panel of a full figure Thor... Wow!

And thanks for the tennis lessons for free. 😉

So I am not the only one who is simultaneously a comic art fan and a tennis nutty...love love love the comparison with Rafa's forehand, spot on! (but I am afraid I am more of a Nole supperter...)

Nope, you are not alone - I'm here...in spite of you being a Novak fan ;) I kid! But I'll tell you what. Their matches - some of the best competitive sports viewing, let alone just tennis, I've ever seen. You throw Roger in there and we've been some lucky witnesses over the last 15 or so years! We're nearer to the end, but hoping to see more! Thanks!

Great page - yow!  Thanks for your description of the stats & corresponding art underneath - I always find that info so interesting in regards to the production of the actual comic...  Great stuff.

Man - the cover to this issue is an absolutely indelible image, frozen in my head since I first saw it lo, those many years ago...  Spidey has been dragged along by Mjolnir a few times since then (most recently in 'Avengers: Endgame') - and most likely before then, too - but that was the first time I saw it.  Seeing this page immediately took me back to the store and spinner rack...

And, yeah - the son of Odin looks like he's going with a forehand smash there in panel 4... :)  I love the fact that that incredible fourth panel is silent, an uncharacteristically non-verbose response from Thor in reply to the slow-pitch "It's Thor!  Let's get out of here, Charlie!"  He obviously wasn't going to waste a good quip on these bozos.  Great pick up, and SUCH a treat to score a cool piece for so much less than expected.  Cheers, mate!

Yup, the Milgrom cover definitely stands out. Probably the first time I had seen Mjolnir take Spidey for a ride, too. I'm thinking if it indeed happened before, why try again, Pete?!  :) And I WILL get by Milgrom Spidey piece!

Good call out on Thor not even responding to these dudes - just goes with the forehand hammer chuck, and off the back foot, too :) I hadn't even thought that but absolutely looks that way! Thanks for the great comments, Jason!
