This page has a great assortment of Heck-isms and nice Everett touches. There's something I like about Bill Everett's inking of others from this period. He has that supple, juicy line and delicate feathering that I have loved since childhood. Unlike Giacoia and Wood, who made Don look great on those early Avengers issues, Everett somehow doesn't seem to sublimate Heck's style, but actually amplifies Don's quirky elements in a wonderful way.

Remember Marvel Feature #1 with the Defenders where Bill Everett defiantly inked all of Ross Andru's pentimento finding lines instead of honing in and solidifying things (like he did two issues later over Andru)... or, how Bill leaned in to Gene Colan's nuttiest anatomy choices on the Iron Man and Sub-mariner #1 cover... instead of correcting them? That tension between naturalism and cartoon-borne patterning completely slays me in Everett's artwork.

Speaking of quirky patterning, take your time trying to sort out what Don was up to with his wall of machinery at Avengers mansion. It's so delightfully odd and expressive. What are the volumetrics of that whole thang? Although it's not colored that way in the comic, the upper left corner is actually the floor moving away in perspective, and there's a modernist (circa 1971) chair in front of a view screen on the far right side. But again... Everett went with abstract patterning rather than nailing it down into concrete objects.

I wonder if Stan or Roy ever said "Look at Kirby... there should be more futuristic machinery around in the backgrounds of our stories." Jack was of course unsurpassed, and Steranko had his cool wallpaper machinery/technology approach... but I think that Don Heck and John Buscema never felt all that passionate about adding weird Kirby-tech machinery to their comics environments. When asked to include fanciful technology, Heck and Buscema both created those odd curvilinear computer banks that looked like maybe they didn't do anything at all.

Just as Gene Colan and Bill Everett's rendering of Natasha two issues prior set me on a lifelong path of my own, I wonder if Robert Mapplethorpe got a glimpse of Hawkeye/Goliath's costume in this period and thought "This gives me an idea." That outfit seemed to make some kind of sense at the time!

This page shows just how great a storytelling artist Don Heck truly was and of course the Everett inking makes it perfect.
