Description

Genoa Economic and Financial Conference was a meeting of 34 nations held in Genoa, Italy from April 10 to May 19, 1922. The goal of the conference was to deal with the economic and political issues of Europe, and to deal with Germany and Russia, both of which had been excluded from the Paris Peace Conference of 1919. Opper did a good number of these Sammy and His Pals panels during this time, referring of course, to Uncle Sam. In this case, Uncle Sam is presenting George Harvey, who was the Ambassador to Great Britain at the time. Harvey was a prot�g� of Joseph Pulitzer, and for a few years was the managing editor of the New York World. Harvey had a reputation for an acid-tongue, which may be the crux of the bean-spilling mentioned here. You can certainly tell that Opper was not a fan.

This cartoon ran in May of 1922. I've found it published in a few papers on different dates in May, with the earliest being May 9, 1922. I remain a fan of Opper's late bigfoot style.

Opper's work is always interesting. This piece is fascinating.
