While Alex Ross does those brightly lit superheroes so well I've always been drawn to his darker, moodier pieces. The lighting in this one is par excellence!

Man, some killer adds of late - congrats!  The figure and color work is of course top notch, as per usual with Ross, but what really stands out to me here is the lighting and shadow effects... his command in that area is uncanny!

It's been a dream of a week for sure man! Ross just has that fantastic ability to pivot seamlessly between super brightly lit characters like Superman and these moody pieces - and do both at such a high level. I also think there's a mixed media approach to this piece with watercolor, gouache and perhaps some selective air brushing for the lighting (?). I can't be 100% certain of it but it brings a few of the different effects home perfectly. The radiated light from the sanctum and the spooky glow from Loki's scepter specifically are fantastic.

It is ALWAYS a treat to see Alex Ross portray the Sorceror Supreme, and here you not only have an exquisitely backlit Spidey (the lighting on his right arm and shoulder just kills me!) but a great image of... WHAT THE...?!!?  LOKI?!!? :)

(That was my reaction when I first saw this piece. :)  Gorgeous pick up!  Most sincere congrats!)

Ross still continues to amaze me after all of these years.  He puts Spidey in a pose that you wouldn't think twice about  if you saw it drawn in the standard comic book style, but here given Ross' realism and depth we see Spidey positioned in a way that gives the sense that this is a person with unnatural abilities, but it's believable.  Really nice cover!

Just had to swing past and leave another comment on your beautiful piece here, Eranga.  I've been thinking about how real world pop culture can influence or impact the visuals or visual space of other pop culture entities, and it is really fascinating to me to see what is adopted by the comics (for instance) because of the successes of the Marvel movies; what might suddenly show up in a comic book as a foundational touchstone that had never appeared before it showed up in a movie a few months before...  It's interesting to see what artists will adopt, and how they adopt it.  Like here, how Alex uses the movie "window" of the Sanctum Sanctorum (and why wouldn't you?  It's a brilliant visual and one of those "well, of COURSE it would look like that!" elements from the movie), but does his own take on Loki's scepter, slightly different from the movie, but familiar enough to the movie audience that a new reader might be roped in, thanks to the cover.  Just cool.

But I can't get over the red used here on Loki's cloak, and how effective it is in what otherwise feels like a black and white piece, thanks to spectacular backlighting and Doc's dark attic (leave it to Alex to nail chiaroscuro in a color piece).  The (even darker) red of the Spider-Sense visualization denotes the danger while (to my eyes) creating a cool dissonance or disconnect with its harsh, "pop" appearance among an otherwise fine art piece (which is the point of spider-sense, and I'm sure why Alex employs it here).  Okay, what I guess I'm struggling to say is that I just love this piece for its eye and brain candy, Eranga!  (Phew!  It feels good to get that off my chest!)  Congrats again on this epic score, man.

Well...HUH. I never picked up on the MCU Sanctum skylight (?) connection OR the similarity with Loki's scepter!
