Description“The Strange Death of Alex Raymond (page 242)” (2021)by Carson Grubaugh (1981- ) and Dave Sim (1956-) 11 x 17 in., ink and brush on Bristol board Coppola Collection This page represents one of the reasons that I think classically produced original comic art prices are booming. Everything used to be done on one piece of paper, and the sordid history of the page was all on that completely one-of-a-kind document. Kirby jotted notes and penciled it. Stan wrote notes and dialog. Artie Simek laid in the letters and handed it off to Joe Sinnott to ink (and truly embellish). Back to Stan to proof, approve, and edit. Photocopies went around, but the page was the page and carries all that DNA. We live in a great age, too, but different. An inker gets a scan from 8 time zones away, prints out as many cyan copies as needed, and can play with options. The thing is manipulated more when it is done. No one is writing any Declaration of Independences out by hand, with ink, on parchment anymore. And the secondary market is voting with its wallets on how special that makes the old stuff. DSOAR page 242, from the get-go, is a hybrid. Played with and laid out with one image of the Gravitts couple, some of the page committed to paper, the other image of the Gravitts’ that was used as the master shot is elsewhere (also elsewhere in my collection), eventually merged somewhere in digital space for their appearance in the book, dialog added in. I’m not automatically saying one is better or worse. They are different. But from a distance, the amount of old school style stuff in circulation is only going to go down in supply, by definition, and supply-and-demand is a merciless equation. In The Strange Death of Alex Raymond, Dave Sim, legendary creator of Cerebus the Aardvark, and Carson Grubaugh, talented and creative artist across multiple media, explore and examine the line-making techniques of some of comics' greatest photorealist creators. The art is impressive. And thanks to work of master production designer and line-smith, Sean Michael Robinson, the integrity of the printing and reproduction is truly unmatched. “The Strange Death of Alex Raymond” is self-contained in a 320-page, 8.25x12 inch oversized hardcover book. From April 28 – May 22, 2021, the book is available for its normal retail price at a pre-sale Kickstarter, a S/N limited edition sold out on May 10. Original art is available, though… at least for now. Kickstarter.com, search for “The Strange Death of Alex Raymond.” There was also one (morbid) reward tier in the Kickstarter, a 1/1 edition with the original art for the bookplate affixed to the book along with a few pages of original art (“morbid” because the tier price of $906.56 is the date of the titular death). Yes, yes… that was me who got it. I also picked up some other art that I liked from the book. Social/Sharing |
