Description

I am a fan of great inking. So that easily makes me a fan of the virtuoso Alfredo Alcala. A terrific artist overall of course, but an incredibly gifted inker. I became quite excited when I saw this page available. DC Publisher Carmine Infantino traveled to the Philippines to recruit talent there in 1972. He placed Alcala on horror, war and mystery titles soon after that. This page is from Weird War Tales #11 that was published in February 1973. It is among the first twenty or so stories Alfredo created for his first American publisher.

The artwork (pencils, inking and even the lettering!) was done by Alcala. He created such a sense of atmosphere within the panels of this page. Accomplished so well that it needs no color to feel like complete art. Just tremendous rendering here.

The finale is his beautiful signature in the last panel. Thrilled to have this piece in my collection.

This can be studied in a classroom. The sweeping work carrys you to the place, time, and atmosphere of a point in history with immense linework and inks. A village in a war torn countryside and our heroes get a supernatural assist are all story beats I got just in this page alone.

Wonderful page - a nice showcase of Alcala's Booth and Leyendecker-influenced "etching" style.
