DescriptionMy first Walking Dead page, believe it or not, and for me a true key page of that great book.Let me just say a few words about Adlard's art first. I need to stress that I consider him to be a fabulous storyteller but while as far away from the Adam Hughes or Kevin Maguire school as he can be, an incredible talent at depicting human emotions. Just look at this page that you can absolutely read without any word balloons (perfect proof of super fluid storytelling). In panel one, Rick looks already annoyed by the brat who's perfectly despicable in panel 2. You can tell just looking at his face that he is full of himself. Then to his surprise and ours, Rick throws him against the wall to show he is not going to take any bullshit from him. The look on his face is pitch perfect. He didn't expect such a reaction and is completely overwhelmed by it. The little saliva drop coming out of his mouth is a nice detail that shows he is shocking on Rick's strong grip. He's only one hand but he is no pushover. I absolutely love panel 4 as Adlard is only giving us 2 thirds of Rick's face but it's enough to tell us he means business and won't be bullshitted by the brat. His mother behind Rick doesn't seem too pleased by the scene but she knows how annoying her son can be. In panel 5, the brat is so not a treat to Rick that he walks away from him while he's trying to breathe again. And then, the reason I bought this page and that I think it's so important is that I strongly feel that Rick's (final) fate is decided once and for all in this panel. I won't say more for those who still need to catch up on WD but for me this is it and kind of knowing where the book was going when I read the last couple of issues, it was obvious to me on that page, in that final panel, what would happen in the book to its titular character. Just look at that face, the boy is radiating pure hate (which strangely enough I find more intense in pencils than inks, probably due to the lost spontaneity of the inked version). So, it may be just me finding that this page is super important within the series and if it is, the emotions expertly portrayed here are enough to savor a page by a true modern master who's been working on such a famous book for so long that his genius storytelling has become somewhat overlooked and taken for granted. Beautiful, as it is getting to the end of the series, Adlard would provide some of his best and most polished work.

Yep, that's a key page. What a great moment to get, too, in the Rick arc. And I 100% agree with you on the fantastic storytelling, you don't even need the word balloons to get the gist of the story. Adlard did a great job on this page. Congrats!

Really cool page, F M! I'm wincing a little bit here to admit this, but I've never actually read nor seen 'The Walking Dead' (yeah - I'm the one person) so I wanted to really look at the page and get a feel for it before reading (what precedent has defined to be) your excellent description of it. I was immediately struck by the narrative prowess, and by how there was no mystery as to what was happening here; the shock (or maybe betrayal) the throttled character feels by this outburst, the pent-up rage of the throttler... The page layout and facial depictions are reminiscent to me of Steve Dillon and (especially) John Cassaday (that is to say, excellent), and it sounds like you scored a really important character moment with this page. It's really cool, for sure, F M! Great technical comic narrative work (which I love). Congrats!
