Description

"The Spirit of '76" originally titled "Yankee Doodle" was painted by Archibald M. Willard, of Cleaveland Ohio for exhibit in Philadelphia during the 1876 centennial celebration. Willard did his painting after he saw a holiday parade pass through the town square in Wellington, Ohio.
In July 1939 the cover of MICKEY MOUSE MAGAZINE featured a parody of the painting with Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy substituted for the soldiers. The art was adapted by Disney in 1975 as part of the logo for America on Parade at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. It was the basis for the design of the opening float in the parade. - In 1939 a print on heavy stock was sent to a theater manager with other Disney paper. This time Disney took the liberty to show both the painting and their version together overlaid on photos of war time events from our history. Here we see this scarce print done to a size of 14 1/4 x 19 1/2 inches.
