Description

What sold me on this page was the great inking by Terry Austin, not to mention the nice images of "claws out" Wolverine, Colossus and Kitty Pryde, penciled by June Brigman. This issue was written by classic X-Men writer, Chris Claremont.

This story was drawn for the unpublished Questprobe #4, most likely in late 1985. Questprobe was originally intended as a 12-issue mini-series that was supposed to tie in with a graphical adventure video game series created by well known game creator Scott Adams (not the same guy as the creator of Dilbert.) Older computer geeks such as myself will be familiar with the computers this ran on, such as the Commodore 64, Atari 400/800 and TRS-80 Color Computer, which I had as a kid.

The first three Questprobe games and comics featured The Hulk, Spider-Man, and Human Torch & The Thing. The 4th game, featuring the X-Men, was in development when the game company went bankrupt, but the comic was already completed. Instead of letting it go to waste, Marvel published it a year or so later in 1987 in Marvel Fanfare #33.

Fans had to wait another few years for a computer game featuring the X-men to appear. X-Men: Madness in Murderworld, came out in 1989 and included a comic featuring some nice early art by Mark Bagley (some of which can be seen on CAF).

This is from the first issue of Marvel Fanfare that I ever bought.  As a kid, I usually passed over this book because for the price of one Marvel Fanfare, I could otherwise buy two other titles.  But I bought this one since it had the X-Men, and seeing this original page for the first time felt like going through a time warp to when I was ten.  Thank you for the great blast from the past, and for reminding me once again of how great an artist June Brigman is.

Agreed that June Brigman is very underrated.  Glad this brought back good memories for you!

Clean X-Men action from the 80's in any context is still highly sought after for completists. The backstory to this issue finding print is very 80's Marvel.

When I bought this issue of the stands, I remember my first thought was "Wow, Power Pack's June Brigman doing an X-Men issue with one of the greatest X-Men inkers of all time, how interesting!". The combination really worked beautifully and Austin's inks in particular really are a delight here.

I loved the Hulk Questprobe issue and followed the series. I wasn't aware of this story and haven't read the story in Fanfar - will have to pull this and read. Congrats and thanks for sharing!

I hate to tell you that I used to own that Questprobe #1 cover art, but I foolishly sold it back in 2004. One of my many regrets, but I just couldn't afford to keep everything over the years.

Suckers are poppin' up like maggots. Little known fake fact: Logan wrote for Hallmark as a side gig for extra $$$. I was a Brigman fan, too. Her Alpha Flight run was great. I dig how she went there here, and made Wolvie as hairy as he should be. And the way she drew action, with good angle choices, were always so solid. Nice score. Congrats!
