Description

What can I say about this piece, I am still struggling for words to describe it. I worked with Dave from Jade Giant to set up this commission of a never comprised group of the Sinister Six, but of some of my favorite of all time Spider-Man villains.

The detail that Joe put into this piece is absolutely amazing. Everywhere I look there is something new. Spider-Man's web shooter breaking from his left arm. Spider-Man's eye darting left to see Doc Ock's tentacle crashing in on him. Shocker's eyes trained on Spidey as a missed punch blows a chimney away. The one open hand of The Vulture as Toomes reaches for Spider-Man. The texture of the Sandman, Electro poised to throw bolt after bolt.

Beyond question however, Spider-Man smashing Mysterio's helmet against the ground as he avoids the blows of his enemies.

Joe absolutely outdid himself on this piece. His skill is everywhere you look in this massive piece. Working with Dave from Jade Giant was so great. Easily one of the best pieces in my collection.

This is one that Bennett fans will look at and use as a benchmark for their commissions!

Thanks - I love it. I am going to have Mark Morales ink the boards, but I had to post Bennett's incredible pencils.

This is EPIC. Probably the largest commission I have ever seen? I can't think of one larger anyway.

Where to start? I guess the composition of the overall piece is the most impressive to me. It's easy when you start throwing characters into a piece to let the balance of it get out of whack. Not here! Taking advantage of Sandman's powers, making him enormous is perfect to take up a huge portion of that left side. Looking across, he balances it visually on the right by having three villains on that side with a proportionate amount of foreground/background "stuff" like the chimney, skylight and Ock's tentacles. That leads me to possibly my favorite element of the whole triptych. Doc Ock's tentacle crossing all three panels and providing a single, unifying element. It almost slashes across your eye as it breaks all three page borders.

THIS SHOULD BE A POSTER!

Thanks Chris - I didn't even touch on the composition but yes, this is insanely balanced. Joe is a master of filling large spaces, but with purpose and intent. His work on Immortal Hulk shows that page after page. The entire piece is just full of intentional design choices that lead to the focal point of Spider-Man.

I also would love to see this as a poster!!

WOW. I've legitimately been staring at this for the last two minutes and still don't think I've taken in all it has to offer. Guess I'll just have to stare a little bit longer! Great classic renditions of everyone. Huge congrats!

Thanks! I feel the same way, every place I look I find something new. I couldn't be happier with this piece. And yes, classic costumes for me!

Utterly, insanely breathtaking on every level! If Joe ever has a big old retrospective book on his best work (I'd totally buy a poster-sized edition of his commissions - how epic woud that be?), this needs to be the centrepiece - a huge, fold-out magnum opus which any fan of the medium would be blown away by. Love it!!

Wow thank you so much - I agree, this piece is just awesome any and everywhere you look. It truly is a tremendous piece and Joe just killed it on this piece.

Such a great piece. May I ask, did you choose Shocker as your own addition to the Six? Ive always felt he shouldve been the one that Michelinie and Larsen shouldve added rather than discount Hobby Macendale. He's even in the damn story but they dont add him!

I did select him, and for much of the same reasons. I also never felt that Kraven fit.

This is so good. The smashing of Mysterio's helmet puts it over the top for me. What a piece, and it's wall power too.
