DescriptionI couldn't stop at just one panel from this classic story, which really made an impression on me in my youth. I'm delighted to own a Wrightson piece featuring the creeping dead, for which he is so well known. This drawing has the same vibe of the famous and surprisingly peaceful painting of Wrightson's depicting a vampire carrying a victim away from the viewer up a snowy hill at dusk. Love how he framed the wraith by the wooden fence. The figure, trees, fence, and snow are all expertly indicated, as per his usual. Thanks for taking a look! Social/Sharing |

The effect of the falling snow puts the emphasis on the viewer I think. Meaning to say that it's not so much a part of the illustration as it is a perspective for the viewer. It has almost a 3D effect in its placement. Like you're actually standing there in the snowfall and seeing something that you just can't quite make out.

Yeah, that's right on. I do feel immersed in the scene. The distant figure and high-density of snowflakes combined with the worm's eye view and slightly fisheyed perspective all add to the effect for me.

Great moody panel. Could easily translate to a storyboard/movie and lose none of the impact.

This is something else, great example of Wrightson's craft.

There is no such thing as a "simple" Wrightson. This piece illustrates that perfectly. What appears a fairly simple scene at first glance has the right balance of details and composition and that is no easy task to accomplish. Very nice piece indeed.

Seen from the other side of the fence at a low angle of the snow pack, the curvature of the fence with distance makes it look like a row of crosses marking graves. Wrightson makes this lyrical tale of snow and death intertwined as forces of nature. Even if it was just a deer walking through this scenery, you can see the intent of the artist is wholly different than what an out of context work could aspire to be.

Now, the rather difficult task of trying to put a page back together! We all need hobbies and goals. Good luck.

Is "sublime" an odd word to use for an image of a (choke) rotting, supperating, maggot-ridden, re-animated corpse? Good Lord!

Absolutely beautiful, he was the best around during the period this was created. Such an eerie image, from a haunting comic strip by the untouchable Master of Horror...

The snow blobs against the toned landscape really create a feeling of serenity. All that is perfectly juxtaposed against the monster walking. Such a beautiful piece! Huge congrats!

You can almost hear the shambolic zombie pushing quietly through the heavy snow. Imagine being the person finding that trail, with all the tiny, gristly bits sprinkled on top? Man, Wrightson was the best at setting these types of scenes. Quiet horror. What a great score. Huge congrats!

Beautiful Wrightson panel. The Graham Ingels influence is strong here. Congrats!

Wrightson drew each panel for this story separately and sold them individually back in the day. I've only seen these come to auction or private sale as individual panels, and by coincidence, the two panels I have hit the market from different sources around the same time and I grabbed each of them. Thanks for asking and also for your kind comment!

Great Piece!!! I especially love how Wrightson composed this scene with the center of interest in the background, framed by the foreground elements. In addition to being a esquisite draftsman and inker, he was also such a master of staging a scene!
