DescriptionAs with almost any character associated with Chris Claremont's X-Men run, the origin of Mr. Sinister is quite convoluted. Originally, the character was conceived to be almost immortal. A man aging slowly over a thousand years but trapped in the body of an 11 year old boy who lived at the same orphanage Scott Summers was raised in. But since Marvel higher ups were tired of Claremont after his 16 year run on the characters, they allowed Peter Milligan to come up with his own idea for Sinister's origin in the 1996 series The Further Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix. Milligan established that Sinister was a Victorian-era scientist named Nathan Essex who was given powers by Apocalypse. With Claremont's return to the X-Men franchise with this series, he once again continued with the origin that he himself had originally come up with, which is why we see the 11 year old Nate casting Mr. Sinister's shadow. It's a very simple cover, but Grummett's layout design, particularly how the shadow is cast, makes the composition quite effective and eye catching. Social/Sharing |

Simply Sinister! Fitting. A cool cover. The use of shadow works and a good reminder of the origins of the character. I missed that other Milligan run you mentioned entirely. Thanks for the history

A triumphant cover that intrigues me with ASM 278 vibes with the foreshadowing message of the story within. The composition shows Grummett's confidence as a storyteller and has the horror element with Nate Summers haunted by Mr. Sinister.

I wish Marvel had simply stuck with Claremont's origin for Sinister. It's such a convoluted mess now with multiple versions of the character and a changing status between not being a mutant and then being a mutant, with drastic personality changes along the way. This cover is quite good, as Grummett does an excellent job with the shadow here.

Yeah, super effective cover. Love how little Nate's eyes are shadowed. And definitely makes you want to open up the comic and see what's up inside, one of the best compliments I can give a cover image. Congrats, Ruben!

A simple image? Yes. A beautiful image? Oh yeah! Love this cover. And you know, I don't understand why people say that the X-Men mythos is complicated. I mean, all you have to do is garble grabble gobbledy gook rassum frassum gumball wrapper marshmallow nut pie! It's THAT easy!

This image would be right at home as a modern horror movie poster! Good stuff!

I also noticed and liked the shadowy eyes.
And this once, let's not complain about coloring our fav' b&w pieces because the colorist had the good taste of keeping the background white which has such impact and could have otherwise ruined the piece.
Great cover.

See, that's what happens when you don't pick up your toys. You will be possessed by a thousand year old immortal weirdo. Don't even ask what happens if you don't eat your broccoli!! Grummett came up with a fantastic simple design here. It has all the events you need, but nothing to distract from the oomph of the image. Very cool cover, Rubén. Big congrats!

OOF!! I LOVE me a good shadow cover, and this is incredible. Great, classic composition, stark and inviting at the same time. Yes, please - even with no real interest in the character of Mr. Sinister, I would very much like to open up this issue and see what's going on (with the hopes that Mr. Grummett might also illustrate the interiors...). Awesome cover, and regardless of which Sinister origin you subscribe to as dominant, it's obvious poor Nate here is a shadow of his former self. REALLY strong Grummett X-covers you just posted, Ruben! What beauties!
