I have to admit that till 2 years ago the name Alex Toth did not ring a bell. It was artist Elsa Charretier who mentioned his name during a twitter or e-mail conversation. So I bought and read the Genius Illustrated an Genius Isolated books (truly impressive works) and some Toth books (Bravo, Creepy presents,...) and was blown away. Especially his earlier work (from 1953 onwards) is some of the best comic art that I have ever seen. I truly love his art in horror and romance stories (more than the war or superhero ones) and this became a "if I ever.." thing. And that thing happened. I'm over the moon with this glorious title page from the short romance story Free My Heart (1953, although the title "Confessions of a war widow" is mentioned on top of this page and other pages of the story) in Popular Romance issue 23 and inked by Mike Peppe. The page is oversized and the comments from Toth, in his exquisite lettering, make it even more special.

What a beautiful Toth page, and the note adds immeasurably. That first large picture panel is gorgeous, and he made a good choice pushing the word balloons up into the title panel so as not to interfere with the picture too much!

Beautiful page. Love the last panel and the note at the bottom. Awesome to see work that an artist was excited about and enjoyed. FYI this story looks like it was from Popular Romance #23 with Mike Peppe as the inker. It's reprinted in Setting the Standard and Genius Isolated. Congrats, Jan!

A wonderful confession of Toth of how much he enjoyed the writing and working on this. The artwork makes it clear cut that his enthusiasm was in this from the start.

Peppe did an outstanding job inking Toth's pencils, in general and especially on this page. And the note from Toth at the bottom is priceless. Congratulations on a great page.

Wow, like this one a ton Jan! Surprised I didnt see it before when we were corresponding about Tim. Just a fine example and like you, I prize this period at Standard with Romance and Horror work (but especially romance) more than his Superhero work in later years.
