Description

This is the cover to the first of a two part story which continues in Superboy #47. Yeah, I know, most of you look at a piece like this and think "Meh, it doesn't really have anything on it. Just Superboy's leather jacket and Green Lantern's mask.". You're right, of course. But to me this cover is great because of symbolism represented on it and it's a wonderful reminder of the sense of wonder that comic book covers gave us all when we were just kids discovering comics for the first time. A time at which I think most if us were far more innocent and took things we saw very literally.

I caught the superhero comics bug at age 12, so a few years older than many of you who caught it between the ages of 5 to 8. But if I had seen this cover on the newsstand when I was in that single digit age range, I like to think that I would've grabbed it quickly and immediately thought, "Oh no! That's Superboy and Green lantern's costumes sinking into lava! What happened!? There's no way they could survive that. Even with their powers, lava is SO hot, it burns everything it touches!". As you can tell, yes, I was also fascinated by volcanoes as a child and infatuated by their power and the pyroclastic flow that results when the volcanoes blow their tops.

But my point is that I literally would've wondered whether the heroes could've survived or whether the title would have to come to an end if they actually perished at the end of the story. As I say, that sense of wonder we tend to have as young kids. That's why, while seemingly a "nothing" cover to many collectors who view it now as grown adults, this cover to me is actually so much more than that. This cover was published when I was already a fully grown adult myself, yet it's a perfect example of what I keep trying to explain to other collectors who see the sky falling in this hobby over the next 10-20 years, under the badly mistaken idea that no kids read anymore and therefore won't be around to want to buy this stuff when they're older. Based on that thinking, this cover should not touch on any of my nostalgia buttons since it came out when I was already a long time reader and grown man. Yet here it is, evoking as many (if not more) nostalgic feelings and thoughts of childhood as any cover or page that DID come out during my youth. Nostalgia is NOT entirely tied only into things you remembered from your personal childhood years. It comes in many forms, which is also why grown men can collect contemporary art that has just been published, as it is the CHARACTERS who are actually the single most important factor than anything else. Our love for these characters transcends time, so that's how many of us can look at and collect contemporary pages and still feel nostalgic about them. Because it's the characters on the pages that still evoke thoughts , feelings and memories about the love we've had for these same characters for most of our lives.

I completely agree with you, Ruben in that this admitedly very simple cover is very effective in the sense that it compels the reader (and it doesn't have to be a kid) to open the book and see what happened to the characters. So, a job well done and I will take those kind of covers (that tells a story) over any Psylocke pinupy cover that while well drawn, tells nothing about the story's content (because, yes, storytelling should begin with/include the book's cover).

def a cool cover, and agree with your points. It's a sleeper but it's still powerful. And even as someone who isnt that into either character I can see the appeal in this cover. also sort of reminds me of T2/Terminator at the end for obvious reasons. congrats Ruben!

I was still refusing to buy Green Lantern when this issue came out due to my anger over what they did to Hal Jordan and the GLC in issue #50.  Heck, I probably hoped that Kyle melted in the lava when this hit the stands.  That said, it's a great cover that draws in the potential reader.  Oh, and I also came to really like Kyle shortly after this, and was a fan of Judd Winick's run on the title.

Well said! I am drawn towards the emotive pieces and not necessarily the great battle pages or poses. However, I will cave in every once in a while.

Are you sure this was lava? I thought they were hot tubbin'. ;) It's difficult to tell in black and white.

Another great "TG" to the collection.

Great cover Ruben! The Superboy jacket and Kyle's mask are quintessential 90's era DC goodness. I'm all about the nostalgia factor. It shows we're human : )

This is what happens when Frodo DaCollector and Gollum DaCliffGuy fight over a cover on Mount Doom.

What you write about nostalgia is SO true.  And yeah, when we were kids, a cover image like this could really turn our worlds upside down.  Hell, even as an adult, I find myself getting sucked in when a cover shows a beloved character in a situation that spells certain doom, or worse, lying on the ground seemingly dead.  OH NOOOOOO!  But anyway, I don't think you should ever downplay an image like this.  it's ultra cool, it's well drawn, it's visceral, it's kinda terrifying, and  -- well -- it's got me so worried for Superboy & Green Lantern that I think I need to lie down for a while...

You know how much I like dead heroes lol

Everyone knows these characters including kids today so can understand how it gives us a feeling of nostalgia. It's an awesome piece that will test the hands of time! Congrats!

Great, great, really great write-up, Ruben - it not only made me think about the cover, but about so many of the things I loved about comics when I was a kid (and still love today).  Really well put.  Isn't this hobby just the most wicked cool thing?  Even / especially if it's covered by lava?  Like, the more lava, the cooler it gets?  And, of course, liquid magma is obviously the reason I don't leave any of my artwork on the floor.  The floor is lava, you know.  Terrific presentation and piece, Ruben.

A treatise on nostalgia and why we collect. I like that as much as I like the cover, which is to say quite a bit. :) I knew it was Terry Austin's inks before I even read the name. The flames and heat in the background are a signature of his inking style, imo. And these types of covers are my favorites, with strong symbolism and great emotional draw. Grummett is under appreciated for his layouts and subtle messaging behind the imagery/layouts he uses. Very cool, Rubén. Big congrats!

I didn't even see the GL mask for a second there!  Cover definitely makes an impact and does whatever any good cover should do - make you want to open up the book and see what's going on inside!  Congrats, Ruben!

I love seein covers like this. It inspires the imagination and makes you want to read the issue to find out what's going on.
